The three modules in this PR — JWT handling, webhook signature verification, and webhook authentication middleware — are security-critical entry points. Every token issuance and webhook delivery flows through them.
While these modules achieved 95%+ line/statement coverage under Jest's standard code coverage metrics, high coverage does not guarantee strong tests. A test that merely exercises a code path (covered) is not the same as a test that asserts correctness over it (killed mutations). For example:

These modules collectively handle authentication, authorization, and data integrity verification — the three pillars of API security. Undetected mutants in any of these could lead to security breaches.
Mutation testing introduces small, deliberate faults into source code and checks whether the test suite catches them. Stryker mutates code by:

Each mutation creates a "mutant" — a version of the code with one fault. If tests pass on a mutant, it "survives" (our tests didn't catch it). If tests fail, it's "killed."

- Independent config: Uses
jest.stryker.config.js(not the main jest config) to scope tests to only the 3 relevant test files +utils/jwt.test.ts. This avoids running all 3000+ project tests for each mutant, reducing total run time from hours to ~4 minutes. - Incremental threshold: Break threshold at 70% (not 80%) because some surviving mutants (StringLiteral log messages, ArithmeticOperator constants) are low-risk and expensive to kill. The threshold will be raised incrementally.
- No TypeScript checker: The
@stryker-mutator/typescript-checkerwas disabled due to pre-existing TypeScript errors in unrelated source files (distributionScheduler.test.ts,statementDataProvider.ts). Once those are fixed, the checker can be re-enabled for more accurate mutation analysis.
Scopes test execution to only the files relevant to the mutation targets:

should throw on expired token— was explicitly skipped in the original test suite because the clock-skew tests cover expiry scenarios more comprehensively. TOKEN_EXPIRYandREFRESH_TOKEN_EXPIRYconstants — these are constant values; mutations produce valid-but-wrong constants which are hard to detect without asserting constant values in tests.

Key insight: 58% of all surviving mutants are StringLiteral mutations on log messages, error strings, and header name defaults. These are accepted as low-risk — mutating a log message doesn't change security behavior. The remaining 42% are actionable targets for future improvement.
The thresholds in stryker.config.json follow an incremental floor approach:

- Stryker runs in an isolated sandbox — The
.stryker-tmp/directory contains mutated copies of source files that are never persisted or served. - No secrets are exposed — Stryker uses the test Jest config which doesn't require production environment variables.
- Mutation testing does not execute mutations in production — Stryker operates entirely in CI/test environments.
