Description
This study involves examining and documenting the blocking of Women on Web domains around the world based on OONI data. We have previously documented the blocking of Women on Web in Spain and several other countries. The goal is to publish a new research report on the global blocking of WoW in the fall of 2025.
To produce this research report, this study involves the following steps:
- Update the Citizen Lab test lists to include Women on Web domains that we want to monitor for censorship globally
- Potentially coordinate OONI Run testing of Women on Web domains in specific countries
- Analyze OONI data to examine the blocking of Women on Web domains globally
- Write research report based on the analysis of OONI data
From the above, we have already done step 1 by updating the Citizen Lab test lists to include Women on Web domains. This is done through the following pull request: citizenlab/test-lists#1949
This study involves analyzing the following 14 Women on Web domains:
abortion-korea.org
womenonweb.kr
abortion.kr
women-on-web.kr
aborcja-polska.org
abortion.jp
abortuszr.org
aborsionline.org
comoabortar.org
haplarlakurtaj.org
ijhad.org
pengguguran.org
womenonweb.org
safeabortionpills.org
The main countries where WoW domains appear to be censored (based on OONI data) include:
- South Korea
- Turkey
- China
- Iran
- Spain
From a quick look at OONI data, it seems that these domains are primarily blocked in South Korea, Turkey, and China: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?test_name=web_connectivity&axis_x=measurement_start_day&since=2025-07-14&until=2025-08-14&time_grain=day&domain=abortion-korea.org%2Cwomenonweb.kr%2Cabortion.kr%2Cwomen-on-web.kr%2Caborcja-polska.org%2Cabortion.jp%2Cabortuszr.org%2Caborsionline.org%2Ccomoabortar.org%2Chaplarlakurtaj.org%2Cijhad.org%2Cpengguguran.org%2Cwomenonweb.org%2Csafeabortionpills.org&axis_y=probe_cc
Additionally, we know that www.womenonweb.org is blocked on some networks in Spain: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?probe_cc=ES&test_name=web_connectivity&domain=www.womenonweb.org&since=2025-07-15&until=2025-08-15&axis_x=measurement_start_day&time_grain=day
The Supreme Court of Spain ordered the "partial unblocking" of WoW, but it remains blocked on many networks: https://www.womenonweb.org/en/page/21685/women-on-web-wins-supreme-court-case-against-spain-for-censoring#:~:text=The%20right%20to%20information%20is,Attorney%20at%20Women's%20Link%20Worldwide.
Women on Web is also blocked in Iran: https://explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?probe_cc=IR&test_name=web_connectivity&domain=www.womenonweb.org&since=2025-07-15&until=2025-08-15&axis_x=measurement_start_day&time_grain=day
