Open Role: Social Media Coordinator(s)

Description of project

In 2024 and 2025, I (Liani) built our social media/outreach from scratch, which are mostly event-based posts like: X event is happening in two weeks, and here are some pictures from X event. Or, role-based posts like this.

I have some “progress” or “day-in-the-life’ posts which added a human voice, like this, but they are a far minority because outreach/communications is a lot of work! As a social media coordinator, you’ll engage Open Austinites, fans, and prospective supporters (individuals and orgs alike) by:

• Creating event-based posts
• Optional: Identifying additional areas for posts that further engagement, like building hype around XYZ
• This enables Liani to produce more “day in the life” posts. These posts have been the most effective in building loyal, emotionally invested, and financially invested fans

Description of role

Your Responsibilities:

• Using Canva and Buffer, creating and scheduling event-based posts and role-based posts following Canva templates. Examples:
  • Signature event (3 events a year) - example 1, example 2, example 3
  • Community of Practice flyers and after-the-fact (Dev/Data monthly, Design monthly)
  • Open roles (ad hoc)
• Downselecting and lightly editing the photos to be compatible with social media, like:
  • We might take 20 photos but only need 2
  • Photos for "after-the-fact" posts need to be cropped to a 4:5 ratio to be IG compatible
• Optional: Identify additional areas for posts that further engagement

Shared Responsibilities:

• Shared amongst Open Austin - gather photos and info
• Shared with Liani: Coordinate themes

Not Your Responsibility:

• Monitoring comments and messages
• Sharing “day in the life” updates
• Directly taking photos at events; we will share them with you

Timeframe

I’d like to onboard social media coordinator(s) before our first public event of the year on Tuesday Jan 20, so they can make post-event posts :)

What You'll Be Set Up With

• Access to Open Austin’s Buffer account, for scheduling
• Access to the Open Austin Canva Pro workspace, for flyer design
• Slack account, for communicating
