If you already have some comments (before we go down the wrong rabbit hole), feedback here openPMD/openPMD-api#1588 would be great.
Particularly, because there seems to be quite a difference between the AMReX interface @BenWibking wrote (quokka-astro/quokka#466) with 250s LOC and the one @guj wrote (AMReX-Codes/amrex#3666) with 3600 LOC.
