ZWP10 Z-Wave Controller

This describes the Z-Wave device ZWP10, manufactured by Fakro with the thing type UID of fakro_zwp10_00_000.

The device is in the category of Remote Control, defining Any portable or hand-held device that controls the status of something, e.g. remote control, keyfob etc..

The ZWP10 does not permanently listen for messages sent from the controller - it will periodically wake up automatically to check if the controller has messages to send, but will sleep most of the time to conserve battery life. Refer to the Wakeup Information section below for further information.

Overview

The** ZWP10** multi-channel remote control enables radio control of FAKRO electrical accessories and of other manufacturers which are compatible with the Z-Wave communication module. The ZWP10 remote control can be used to operate up to 10 devices individually on five channels (two devices per channel). It also allows the creation of 10 independent groups. Each group can contain several devices operated simultaneously.

The controller's memory can contain up to 231 devices.

The ZWP10 remote control can serve as the basic controller (PRIMARY) and additional controller (SECONDARY). The PRIMARY controller allows to integrate numerous devices into one radio network, while the SECONDARY controller acts as additional controller in an already existing network.

In addition to Basic control mode, i.e.: ?, ⏹️, ?, the ZWP10 remote control also features Multilevel mode which allows e.g. for smooth dimming of light or smooth operation of roller shutters and blinds (by keeping the ? or ? button pressed). For convenience the ZWP10 remote can be magnetically attached to a wall mounted holder.    

Inclusion Information

By default the ZWP10 is the primary controller. Inclusion mode is enabled by pressing once the IN/EX button at the back of the remote control. LEDs 1 and 4 will turn on. Follow the instructions on the device to be included (within 10 seconds). Upon successful inclusion, LEDs 2 & 3 will briefly turn on.

In case the ZWP10 is added to an existing network: set the primary controller in INCLUDE mode. Press three times the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 remote control to be included until LEDs 1 and 3 turn on. Upon completion, LEDs 2 & 4 will briefly turn on to confirm successful inclusion as SECONDARY controller.    

Exclusion Information

When the ZWP10 is the primary controller: press twice the IN/EX button at the back of the remote control until LEDs 1 and 3 turn on. Follow the instructions on the device to be excluded (within 10 seconds). Upon successful inclusion, LEDs 1 & 4 will briefly turn on.

Remark: you can exclude any included device this way, even if the ZWP10 remote controller has been reset to factory defaults.       

Wakeup Information

The ZWP10 does not permanently listen for messages sent from the controller - it will periodically wake up automatically to check if the controller has messages to send, but will sleep most of the time to conserve battery life. The wakeup period can be configured in the user interface - it is advisable not to make this too short as it will impact battery life - a reasonable compromise is 1 hour.

The wakeup period does not impact the devices ability to report events or sensor data. The device can be manually woken with a button press on the device as described below - note that triggering a device to send an event is not the same as a wakeup notification, and this will not allow the controller to communicate with the device.

The user manual doesn't provide information about waking up the ZWP10 portable remote. However, communication with the primary controller can be initiated by pressing the SELECT button (↔️) for at least 3 seconds until LEDs 1, 2, 3 and 4 start blinking. Communication starts when releasing the SELECT button (↔️). LEDs 1, 2, 3 and 4 will keep blink simultaneously until the communication is finished.    

General Usage Information

The ZWP10 controller enables radio control of FAKRO electrical accessories and of other manufacturers that are compatible with the Z-Wave system. The ZWP10 controller operates up to 10 devices, separately on 5 channels (2 devices for 1 channel). It also allows the creation of 10 independent groups. Each group can include several devices operated simultaneously.

The ZWP10 controller's memory can contain up to 231 devices.

The ZWP10 controller is equipped with a two-way Z-Wave radio communication module exploiting radio wave frequency (frequency depending on the country for which the product is intended). It can be used as the basic controller – PRIMARY (default) as well as an additional controller – SECONDARY. The PRIMARY controller allows for integration of many devices into one radio network while the SECONDARY controller is used as an additional controller in an already existing network (see LEARN MODE function).

1. Operation modes

In addition to Basic Mode of operation (?, ⏹️, ?), the ZWP10 controller offers Multilevel Mode allowing for e.g. smooth dimming of light or partial opening of blinds and shutters:

  • Basic – press function buttons (? or ?) in order to cause the device to move and press ⏹️ in order to stop the device.

  • Multilevel – keep function button (? or ?) pressed until until the device reaches desired position. Operation stops when button of movement is released.

Switch between the 5 channels by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected. The green LEDs will indicate the selected channel:

  1. Channel 1: LED 1
  2. Channel 2: LED 2
  3. Channel 3: LED 3
  4. Channel 4: LED 4
  5. Channel 5: LEDs 1, 2, 3, 4

Each channel features 2 sets of function buttons (?, ⏹️, ?). Each set can be assigned to a device or a device group.

2. Adding devices to the controller

Devices can be added to the controller in several ways.

2.1 Including the device and simultaneously assigning to function buttons  – Combined INCLUDE & ASSOCIATE mode

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Select the channel to which the device should be added by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
    2. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller. LEDs 1 & 4 will now turn on
    3. Press a function button (? or ?) of the channel you want to assign the device to (left or right).
      _(Note: do not press the _⏹️ _button as it triggers another mode.)
      _ LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will now turn on.
  2. On the device to be included:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until the device's network LED switches off.
    2. The ZWP10 controller will confirm success by briefly blinking LEDs 2, 3 & 4.
    3. If the inclusion failed, LEDs 1, 2 & 3 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1.2 (pressing IN/EX button) 

2.2 Including the device without assigning to function buttons – INCLUDE mode

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller. LEDs 1 & 4 will now turn on.
  2. On the device to be included:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until the device's network LED switches off.
    2. The ZWP10 controller will confirm success by briefly blinking LEDs 2 & 3.
    3. If the inclusion failed, LEDs 1 & 4 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1 (pressing IN/EX button) 

The device has been included to the network and can now be assigned a channel and function buttons by means of the ASSOCIATE function.

2.3 Associating a device to function buttons – ASSOCIATE mode

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Select the channel to which the device should be added by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
    2. Within one second:
      1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller.
      2. Press a function button (? or ?) of the channel you want to assign the device to (left or right).
        _(Note: do not press the _⏹️ _button as it triggers another mode.)
        _ LEDs 1, 2 & 3 will now turn on.
  2. On the device to be included:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until the device's network LED switches off.
    2. The ZWP10 controller will confirm success by briefly blinking LEDs 2, 3 & 4.
    3. If the inclusion failed, LEDs 1, 2 & 3 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1.2 (pressing IN/EX button) 

2.4 Adding another controller to the Z-Wave network – LEARN mode

  1. On the primary ZWP10 controller:
    1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller. LEDs 1 & 4 will now turn on.
  2. On the secondary ZWP10 controller:
    1. Within one second, press three times the IN/EX button at the back of the secondary ZWP10 controller. LEDs 2 & 3 will turn on on the primary controller
  3.  Upon success, within 10 seconds:
    • On the **primary controller, **LEDs 2 & 3 will now turn on.
    • On the **secondary controller, **LEDs 2 & 4 will now turn on.

Please note that the secondary controller cannot be used to add (INCLUDE mode) or remove (EXCLUDE mode) devices to the Z-Wave network.

3. Removing devices from the controller

3.1 Remove a device from the network and controller – EXCLUDE mode

The following procedure will remove the device from the Z-Wave network and from the ZWP10 controller and will delete all associations to function buttons.

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Within one second, press twice the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller. LEDs 2 & 3 will now turn on.
  2. On the device to be excluded:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until the device's network LED switches on.
    2. The ZWP10 controller will confirm success by briefly blinking LEDs 1 & 4.
    3. If the inclusion failed, LEDs 2 & 3 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1.1 (pressing IN/EX button) 

Note: With the use of EXCLUDE function it is also possible to remove (reset) devices assigned to other networks.

3.2 Removing a device assigned to function buttons – DELETE mode

The following procedure will remove device assignment to function buttons without removing the device from the Z-Wave network.

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Select the channel from which the assigned device should be deleted by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
    2. Within one second:
      1. Press twice the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller.
      2. Press a function button (? or ?) of the channel you want to delete the device from (left or right).
        _(Note: do not press the _⏹️ _button as it triggers another mode.)
        _ LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will now turn on.
  2. On the device to be unassigned from the function buttons:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until the ZWP10 controller LEDs 1, 2 & 3 turn on.
    2. If the operation failed, LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1.2 (pressing IN/EX button) 

3.3 Removing all devices assigned to function buttons – DELETE mode

The following procedure will remove a group of devices assigned to function buttons, without removing them from the Z-Wave network.

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Select the channel from which all assigned devices should be deleted by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
    2. Within one second, press twice the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller. LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will now turn on.
    3. Press the ⏹️ button of the channel you want to delete all devices from (left or right).
      LEDs 1, 2 & 3 will now turn on to confirm deletion of the group assignment to the function buttons.
    4. If the operation failed, LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will briefly blink. In this case, restart the procedure at step 1.2 (pressing IN/EX button) 

4. Special functions

4.1 Restoring the ZWP10 controller to factory settings – RESET mode

The ZWP10 controller can be reset to factory settings. In this case, the ZWP10 controller will become again a primary controller, and a new Z-Wave network will be created (new Home ID).

  1. On the ZWP10 controller:
    1. Within one second:
      1. Press twice the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller.
      2. Press the SELECT button (↔️).
    2. The following LED sequence will confirm successful factory reset: 2 & 3, then 1 & 4, then again 2 & 3.
    3. If the LED sequence was not seen, repeat the procedure at step 1.1 (pressing IN/EX button)

4.2 Adding remote device to the Z-Wave network – ASSIGN A ROUTE

The following procedure can be used for adding an already installed Z-Wave device to a SECONDARY controller, permanently installed (e.g. ZWMP or ZWMA weather module) via PRIMARY controller (transferring Node INFO). Such situation occurs when the devices (SECONDARY controller and controlled device) are not in direct contact with each other or when the time to perform the ASSOCIATE procedure is too short.

  1. On the primary ZWP10 controller:
    1. Within one second:
      1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller.
      2. Press the SELECT button (↔️). LEDs 1 & 2 will now turn on.
  2. On the installed device to be included:
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until LEDs 3 & 4 on the ZWP10 controller turn on.
  3. On the target controller:
    1. Within 60 seconds:
      1. Select the channel
      2. Perform ASSOCIATE: within 1 second:
        1. Press the IN/EX button
        2. Press a function button (? or ?) of the channel you want to assign the device to until LEDs 1, 2 & 3 on the target controller turn on.
  4. Upon success:
    1. The target controller signals accepting the Node Info by turning on LEDs 1, 3 & 4
    2. The primary ZWP10 controller will acknowledge success by turning on LEDs 1, 2, 3 & 4
  5. If the LED sequence was not seen, repeat the procedure at step 1.1 (pressing IN/EX button)

4.3 Associating Z-Wave devices – ASSOCIATE DEVICE

The following procedure allows one controlled Z-Wave device to control one or more Z-Wave devices that are not assigned to function buttons on the controller, as if the command were directly forwarded. An example is launching one servo motor with the use of another servo motor equipped with a rain sensor.

  1. On the primary ZWP10 controller:
    1. Within one second:
      1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the ZWP10 controller.
      2. Press the SELECT button (↔️). LEDs 1 & 2 will now turn on.
  2. On the controlled device (assigned to function buttons):
    1. Within 10 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until LEDs 3 & 4 on the ZWP10 controller turn on.
  3. On the device to be controlled (not assigned to function buttons):
    1. Within 60 seconds, press the INCLUDE button (P button on Fakro Z-Wave devices) until LEDs 1, 2, 3 & 4 on the ZWP10 controller turn on.

4.4 Copying a group of devices to another controller – COPY GROUP

The following procedure can be used to copy groups of devices from one controller to another within the same Z-Wave network. This is useful when copying the behaviour of one controller to another (spare) controller.

  1. On the **source ZWP10 controller (**from which the group will be copied):
    1. Select the channel from which the device group should be copied by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
  2. On the target ZWP10 controller (to which the group will be copied):
    1. Select the channel to which the copied device group should be pasted by pressing repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected
  3. On the **source ZWP10 controller (**from which the group will be copied):
    1. Within 1,5 second, press three times the IN/EX button at the back of the source ZWP10 controller. LEDs 1 & 3 will turn on.
    2. Within 10 seconds, press the ⏹️ button of the channel you want to copy the group from (left or right) until LEDs 3 & 4 turn on.
  4. On the target ZWP10 controller (to which the group will be copied):
    1. Within 10 seconds, perform ASSOCIATE on the target ZWP10 controller:
      1. Within 1 second:
        1. Press once the IN/EX button at the back of the target ZWP10 controller.
        2. Press the ⏹️ button of the channel you want to copy the group to (left or right)
  5. Upon success:
    1. On the source ZWP10 controller, LEDs 1, 2, 3 & 4 will turn on.
    2. On the target ZWP10 controller, LEDs 2, 3 & 4 will turn on.
  6. If the LED sequence was not seen, repeat the procedure at step 3.1 (pressing IN/EX button on the source ZWP10 controller)

Dimmer

The brightness channel allows to control the brightness of a light. It is also possible to switch the light on and off.

The switch_dimmer channel is of type switch_dimmer and supports the Dimmer item and is in the DimmableLight category.

Device Configuration

The device has no configuration parameters defined.

Association Groups

Association groups allow the device to send unsolicited reports to the controller, or other devices in the network. Using association groups can allow you to eliminate polling, providing instant feedback of a device state change without unnecessary network traffic.

The ZWP10 supports 10 association groups.

Group 1: Channel "1234" left

The ZWP10 portable remote controller features 5 channels ("1", "2", "3", "4", "1234") and each channels features 2 sets of controls (left set and right set). Press repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected.

Association group 1 supports 232 nodes.

Group 2: Channel "1234" right

The ZWP10 portable remote controller features 5 channels ("1", "2", "3", "4", "1234") and each channels features 2 sets of controls (left set and right set). Press repeatedly the SELECT button (↔️) until the desired channel is selected.
