David Game College in London is set to launch the UK's first "teacherless" classroom this September, where 20 GCSE students will rely on artificial intelligence (Al) to guide their learning. Instead of human teachers, the Al platforms will create personalized lesson plans for each student based on their strengths and strengths. Virtual reality headsets will also be used as part of the immersive experience. While some subjects like art and sex education will still be taught by human coaches, the Al will primarily handle the rest, continuously evaluating students and adjusting their learning paths accordingly.
John Dalton, co-principal of the college, believes Al can provide more precise learning adjustments than human teachers, saying it can pinpoint the exact reasons a student might be struggling. Students like Joseph, who has tested the system, feel the technology can help them improve faster by identifying their flaws more accurately than a traditional teacher could.
Despite these advancements, the concept is controversial. Critics like Chris McGovern, a retired headteacher, argue that Al in education could dehumanize the learning process, removing essential interpersonal interactions between students and teachers. McGovern fears this approach could lead to a "soulless" future for education.
David Game College defends the Al classroom, emphasizing that it's not a cost-cutting measure and that they've hired additional staff to support the system. In fact, learning coaches will be present to monitor the students and assist in areas where Al still struggles.
This bold step signals a potential shift in education, with Al playing a more dominant role. While Al is already present in classrooms across the UK, helping with lesson plans and marking, David Game College is pushing the boundaries by placing Al at the center of the educational experience
