This is definitely safer than enabling auto-login directly

Would be interesting to understand why that is. Enabling auto-login where the session is locked is much simpler and as secure in my mind as what is being described here.

I use kde with auto login enabled and use the following to ensure my session is locked on startup:

Run systemctl edit --user plasma-ksmserver and create an override which brings the lock screen on start.

Here is the override cat ~/.config/systemd/user/plasma-ksmserver.service.d/override.conf
