Add Proxmox Provider

Hello,

We would like to help the community to add the Proxmox provider. We are a service provider and also have a Proxmox expertise center. We have several experts who have been contributing to the Proxmox project for years (one of our contributors developed the SDN module for Proxmox as well as the SAN module for taking snapshots on LVMs).

We have just installed MIQ because we have several types of hypervisors (VMware / OLVM / Power IBM / Proxmox, etc.) in our data centers, and we would like to enable Proxmox management through MIQ.

We read the documentation for adding a new provider to MIQ but it's a fail ... (https://www.manageiq.org/docs/guides/providers/writing_a_new_provider), but we would appreciate some assistance to expedite the process. Hey @heller785 I'm not sure how you generated the plugin but the code for refresh looks very out of date, we deleted ems_inv_to_hashes/parse_legacy_inventory ~5years ago.

The provider plugin generator should build a basic inventory/{collector,parser,persister} structure that will work with current MIQ code.

Otherwise the Connection SDK looks good, eventually we'd want to extract that into its own gem. Not sure about the API cache though e.g. @cluster_resources_cache that seems more like a caller concern and if we don't need that behavior then it is wasted memory.

@heller785 we need to standardize on one plugin since we now have 3.

https://github.com/heller785/manageiq-providers-proxmox/tree/main looks a lot better than https://github.com/aderumier/proxmox_manageiq with respect to the Refresh looking like it would actually work. There are some other issues like none of the dotfiles are committed (.gitignore, .rspec, etc...) so you committed a Gemfile.lock.release. The initial commit also includes features and not a clean provider generator. We like to have chunks of work added in commits / pull requests so it is easy to follow.

Can I suggest that you create a pull request against my provider plugin adding your proxmox connection logic heller785/manageiq-providers-proxmox@6ee0694#diff-a53c223d6849e6b375a43d03f69047b300017622d2b80330d7d3bc18a97e3747 so that we can get verify credentials working?

Hi @heller785 I don't think we need any more plugins 😄 We also can't use fog-proxmox unless they change their license.
I found https://github.com/alexohneander/proxmox-sdk-ruby which looks good, it does use faraday v2 which we can't update to yet but we need to fix that anyway.

I've installed Proxmox VE locally and updated https://github.com/agrare/manageiq-providers-proxmox with refresh and specs.

For the issue about the VM console,

I can see the new tab with the VNC console opening and the logs seem to confirm that everything is working, but I still can't see the VM console. The ManageIQ server and the Proxmox cluster are on the same network, so I don't have any connectivity/firewall issues.
Do we need to enable an additional module on the dev infrastructure, or is this a different problem?

I've put in a Work-In-Progress PR to core which adds the provider plugin as well as the core vendor types: #23692
There is a Cross-Repo-Test which pulls in the proxmox-sdk, the new manageiq-providers-proxmox plugin, and that core PR. Currently the tests are green on cross-repo.
We are working on updating some other gems to faraday v2, since the proxmox-sdk gem has a faraday ~> 2 dependency, that shouldn't take too long to complete and in the meantime I've pushed a fork which doesn't depend on faraday v2 for us to test with.

If you can start opening pull-requests to https://github.com/agrare/manageiq-providers-proxmox which adds the functionality you have that would be a big help.

we don't have much Ruby expertise, and we've started by integrating Proxmox into ManageIQ with dependencies on 'rest-client', 'json', and URIs. Do we absolutely have to use other GEMs as you mentioned?

Should we use Faraday? What's the advantage? Sorry for probably asking unnecessary questions; we're trying to integrate Proxmox into ManageIQ as quickly as possible to provide access to our Proxmox platforms via MIQ.

Also, I mentioned an issue with the HTML console, and no one has tried to answer me. Should I start a new discussion about that?

So the rest-client gem is no longer maintained, rest-client/rest-client#764 which is a great reason to use Faraday instead. There also already is a good proxmox-sdk-ruby gem, they happen to use Faraday and it looks to be actively maintained.
Upgrading to Faraday v2 was something we had to do anyway, so this seems like a good time to do it.

Hi regarding the console we were also having issues. It turned out to be ManageIQ/manageiq-ui-classic#8600 which we tried to resolve with the pull request i just opened ManageIQ/manageiq-ui-classic#9783.
After updating the UI, the console was working.

i have uploaded the current state to https://github.com/stiwa-uejo/manageiq-providers-proxmox_ve
and the small corresponding library to use to https://github.com/stiwa-uejo/pve-sdk-ruby since the proxmox-sdk-ruby gem doesnt seem to have any basic functionality so far and hasnt got any updates since creation. Maybe its possible to contribute to it if the developer agrees.

@stiwa-uejo I would just make a pull request to https://github.com/alexohneander/proxmox-sdk-ruby before creating a completely new gem.
What functionality are you looking for that isn't provided? Maybe I can help develop it as well.

Well it says in the Readme it handle all available API endpoints, but if you take a look in the actual implementation it only has cluster endpoints and 3 node endpoints thats it.

That might be their goal, if you create a pull request and they ignore it then we can build our own gem.
In the meantime anything that is missing we can simply use proxmox.request(action, url) to get it. It looks like that's all they are doing in their resource classes anyway.
