Determine if selected text already has formatting (emphasis, strong, etc) for toggle.

Working on adding the toolbar for my editor. Currently have it setup to toggle formatting like emphasis, but I can't figure out how to hook into if the current selection already has emphasis so I can change the button style, like the Crepe example:
