Upgrade to trixie

Hi

I was on stable spirallinux and just upgraded to testing version, everything has been OK but after reboot I lost my DE, now I boot and I got tty mode. BTW when I tried to install again my DE, I got this :
cinnamon is already the newest version so is still there. Also I can load DE finally via startx but how to directly boot to DE?
Idea why?

I would take a look at this first (from tty, before using startx):

sudo systemctl status lightdm # or: sudo systemctl status display-manager
sudo systemctl status systemd-logind

Alternatively, it may be worth taking a look at the log files:

Looks normal to me at first (even if some things seem cut off or incomplete).

Trixie's kernel is currently at 6.12.9, Xanmod's is at 6.12.11 (stable mainline).

Maybe it is ‘only’ the kernel version that is not compatible with the graphics (you are not using NVIDIA by any chance?).

After booting the respective kernel, you could check whether there are any major differences in this output:

sudo journalctl -b

To narrow it down a little:

sudo journalctl -b | grep -in error
sudo journalctl -b | grep -in lightdm
sudo journalctl -b | grep -in display

(spontaneous idea to narrow this down ... maybe there would be better keywords)

btw, the kernel I have with spiral is that one;

the other ones had some problems

This is a rather old Bookworm kernel (September 2023). If you have switched to Trixie, you don't really need it anymore. It is probably colliding with other packages due to its age, which is causing the problems.

I would try to install the latest Trixie kernel:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64 -t trixie # or testing instead of trixie

If you encounter problems, you could try removing the old kernel first.

Overview of installed kernels:

dpkg --list | egrep -i ‘linux-image|linux-headers’

It is about the lines beginning with ‘ii’. You can ignore lines with ‘rc’.

The output could be:

ii  linux-headers-6.1.55-amd64
ii  linux-image-6.1.55-amd64

The command to remove would then be:

sudo apt remove linux-image-6.1.55-amd64 linux-headers-6.1.55-amd64

You may need to run an autoremove before/additionally:

sudo apt autoremove

Another solution step that may be helpful:

sudo apt -f install

finaly, I've installed the 6.12.9 linux kernel and same thing.
btw, I have also the liquorix 6.12.10-1 but only xanmod works : 6.12.11, by working, I mean it boots to my login page.

I don't have that much experience with NVIDIA myself, but there are a lot of posts about the problems that can occur with it (if that's the problem you're having).

For example, there was a problem with 6.12.5, whether from Debian directly or via Xanmod.

If it is due to NVIDIA interacting with the kernel, you could take a look at the following pages:

Or wait until the 6.12.11 kernel arrives at Trixie and then see if this solves the problem. There you can track when which kernel version ends up in which branch:
