Unlocking the power of Trilium's canvas: Free templates and screenshots inside!

Hello Triliumers!

I wanted to start a discussion about one of the most powerful, yet sometimes overlooked, features in Trilium Next: the Canvas.

While Trilium is an exceptional tool for structured, hierarchical text notes, the Canvas opens up an entirely different dimension of knowledge management: spatial thinking.

The Potential and Advantages of the Canvas

The true potential of the canvas lies in its ability to break us free from linear text. It allows us to:

• Visually map out complex relationships and interconnected ideas.
• Retain information better through spatial memory.
• Brainstorm freely without being constrained by a rigid document structure.
• Keep our visual diagrams seamlessly integrated into our personal knowledge base, directly linkable to our text notes.
• It lives inside your note tree. Unlike external tools, a Canvas note is versioned, linked, and nested alongside your other knowledge. It's not an island.
• Excalidraw's simplicity is a feature. The friction is low enough that you can sketch during a brainstorm and refine later. No overengineered diagramming syntax to learn.
• It's shareable and portable. Canvas files are .excalidraw files — plain JSON. You can open them in any Excalidraw-compatible editor, share them, or manipulate them programmatically.

The "Blank Page" Problem

Despite these advantages, I've noticed that a completely blank canvas can sometimes be intimidating. Without a starting point, it's easy for this fantastic feature to become underutilized.

To solve this, I decided to design a set of ready-to-use Canvas templates based on well-known productivity and innovation frameworks. My goal is to lower the friction of starting a visual note and ensure the canvas reaches its full potential in our workflows.

The Templates

A Quick Note on Language: I originally created these templates for my own personal workflow, so the text inside them is currently in Portuguese. However, because Trilium's canvas uses the Excalidraw format under the hood, translating them is incredibly easy! Just save the template as a name.excalidraw file, open it in any basic text editor (or paste the JSON code into an AI model to translate the text fields for you), and then import it back into your canvas.

Other Ways to Leverage the Canvas:

Beyond these specific frameworks, the canvas is incredibly versatile. If you aren't using it much yet, here are a few other circumstances where it shines:

• Software Architecture & Schemas: Mapping out database relationships or system flows.
• Mind Mapping: Breaking down book summaries, study topics, or large projects.
• UX/UI Wireframing: Drafting quick user journey maps or screen layouts.
• Visual Dashboards: Creating a visual "homepage" for a specific project with links to other Trilium notes.
• Creative Writing: Mapping out family trees, character relationships, or complex plot timelines.
• Messy Whiteboarding: Just dumping thoughts out during a meeting or a deep-focus session before organizing them into text.
• Planning long-form writing: mapping story structure, argument flow, or chapter dependencies before writing a single word
• System and architecture diagrams: documenting your self-hosted stack, data flows, or software architecture
• Retrospectives and reflection: visually mapping what worked, what didn't, and what to carry forward
• Brainstorming sessions: free-association before organizing thoughts into structured notes
