Which runner?

I'm using soda exclusively because it was the official recommendation, but it seems unmaintained and abandoned (no updates for a while). The official docs don't mention soda at all.

Then I tried Kron4ek because it is the most recent, but had various issues so reverted to soda for the moment. What's the current default?

I would try proton-ge. It's supported by valve and glorious-eggrol.
