Today, we had a planning meeting about the next set of features we will implement as part of exam mode. We incorported your feedback into this, thanks again! I have updated the start post in this discussion. |

Hi all, We’ve just released another update to Exam Mode. It is now possible to automatically close all exam sessions at the deadline of the series. This allows teachers to not have to worry about doing this manually at the end of the exam. As always, let us know if you have any feedback! |

We're preparing a set of features designed to make taking tests and exams on Dodona more robust, predictable and secure. Because Dodona is used in many different teaching workflows, we'd like to invite interested teachers to try these features early and share feedback before we roll them out to everyone. If you'd like to join the beta, let us know and we’ll add you.
Warning
Beta features may still contain rough edges. We do our best to deliver stable software, but you may encounter occasional bugs.
What’s already implemented in the beta
Enabling exam mode
Teachers can now enable exam mode when creating a series. This is a simple checkbox during series creation. Once the series exists, the setting cannot be changed. The series card gets a distinctive outline on the course page and a dedicated icon in the top-left corner. These cues help both teachers and students immediately recognise exam content.
Starting and stopping an exam
When a series is in exam mode, students must explicitly click Start exam before they can view or solve the exercises. Teacher may optionally pick a password that must be entered by the students when starting an exam. When finished, they click Stop exam. After stopping, the exam becomes inaccessible and no further submissions are allowed. This allows teachers to require students to stop the exam before leaving the room.
Teachers also get an overview of the status of all their students and can lock or reopen the session for one or more students.
Scoped solutions
In Dodona, solving an exercise in a course makes that solution count for every series containing that exercise in the same course. In exam situations that isn’t ideal, because we need to know which submissions were actually made during the exam itself.
For exam-mode series, Dodona only considers submissions that were made inside that exam. Even if the same exercise appears elsewhere in the course, only exam-specific submissions will be taken into account. This gives teachers a clean, unambiguous record of exam work.
Optionally lock down dodona during in exam
When creating an exam mode series, we optionally let teachers choose to lock down Dodona during the exam. This means that from the moment the student started the exam, they won't be able to access other parts of Dodona and won't have access to past submissions.
Extra session security
When starting an exam, we will only allow submissions from the session that started the exam. This will prevent a second user at home being able to solve the exam on behalf of the actual student.
Additional logging
We explicitly log the time, IP-address and user agent of important exam events like starting and stopping the exam and making submissions. This audit log will be available for teacher only.
Releasing an exam series
After an exam has finished, teachers can release an exam in read-only mode so students can see the problem descriptions and their submissions. When releasing feedback from evaluations, the series can optionally also be released at the same time, giving you the option to only release the feedback, or release both feedback together with problem descriptions and submissions.
Automatically stop exams at time of deadline
You can now choose to (optionally) stop all exam sessions at the time of a set deadline.
Revision of labels and icons
We went over all text, labels and icons related to exam mode and made everything consistent. "Exam series" are now called assessments because they can also be used for normal tests.
Status table
We added a status table to assessments (only visible for teachers) to make it more clear what the status of the assessment is and which settings are used.
Planned features
Under consideration
