Native Archive application

Problem

I believe Elementary OS needs to have its own native application for compressing and uncompressing files... FileRoller, besides not being native, has some design layers that are completely outside the Elementary OS standard. Below is a sketch made by Danielle Foré herself. I think it's worth evaluating the idea. At least in terms of apps becoming less dependent on applications made for GNOME.

I think the plan is to create our own workflow for compressing and extracting in Files: elementary/files#2585

But probably we'd leave creating a replacement for more complex archiving tasks up to 3rd parties

Danielle works full time (only person not a volunteer). But she manage also the company (administration, accounting), outreach, social media, urgent bugfixing and security, and all the code reviewing from volunteers and automated infrastructure like github bots and yadda. One woman army.

I think all costs together come around to 6300$/month ? Thats the target goal per month for sponsorships. More advertising would be nice. Im sure theres a lot of people who would love eOS but never heard of it. We pretty much stay in our corner doing the work, so it loses attention.

As for me not sure i could take a break from work for this long, but if there are specific features people want for X or Y app , they can gladly ask me and i would give an estimate based on time to spend on it. I wouldnt work on features or chores for elementary OS Danielle hasn't explicitly given approval for, though.

Writer is in the hands of Ryo, another elementary OS developer, also active in a lot of community projects. Feel free to ask them!

And in response to the System's release, where do you think we could dovulga it... Another question... I see Cassidy's profile sometimes in the repositories. Does he still help by contributing?

Its better in the hands of elementary OS. As long as Danielle gets her wage she can focus fulltime on it

Best would be joining the elementary OS discord and offer to help with social media if you have time for that

He was the cofounder, but left a couple years ago and moved on to something else. Nothing to expect from there.

Yeah feel free! You can share screenshots, or tell about your experience. Without people mentioning eOS i would never have heard of it myself.
