Charts with many nodes - changing direction?

If you have a chart with many nodes, is it possible to make it change directions? See my example - setting aside the question of subgraphs here, is it possible to do something like this, linking together many nodes and changing directions every (say) six nodes, as in the example at the bottom of the diagram?
