Feature request: Increase default value for "items per page"

The default value is 10 at the moment, which is quite low.
Most screens are large enough to display at least 25 rows.

Suggesstion: Increase default to 50 for all pagers

You can just update the value and it'll be persisted in your browser.

Ancient post but seeing as nobody else has, I will reply directly. As others have noted, it does not persist and that is where the pain is. If it was a one time set-and-forget it'd be a non-issue I think, but it does not persist(at least not long term) for any of the lists as far as I can tell. @themarkwilliams has a tampermonkey script that does indeed work around the issue well but it is not as intuitive to set up.

Maybe I'm just an asshole because I don't want to pay $3 for "new" tampermonkey on macos to make my homelab a tiny bit more easy to use but I would rather just not run tampermonkey at all. I would bet a lot of users would love this functionality to change the default if it was natively available seeing as I've also found this issue-converted-to-discussion and it isn't dead.

As others have also suggested, what about something more like infinite-scroll where it will fetch the next set of items once you bottom out? There is some kind of room for improvement with the lists beyond just 10 per page as default.

Portainer is great though, I haven't done much exploring of alternatives to weigh pros and cons since it generally does everything else I need so appreciate the maintainer status anyways.

Anytime I search for a setting or bug in portainer that I like to fix I found a issue which is closed with a comment like this. Why you don't let users choice the default settings? There are much more scenarios than that what you guess. I.e. the Browser forget this setting because its a private session or you want to make a setting for the whole company. That's so annoying!

Keep in mind that open-source rule: no is temporary, yes is forever.

I'd like to add that a user setting to adjust the default per page would be more sensible. If you believe most people want 10 per page then make that the system-wide default but let a user adjust their preferences similar to the user themes.

This, as setups like mine with authelia and traefik end up regularly "forgetting" this configured setting.

This is one of the most frustrating things about using Portainer. Even on a tablet I can see 20+ containers. On a phone there's always the option to scroll down. I would rather do that then have to click through pages.

You've recently back peddled quickly on the password length enforcement and turned it into a setting. Probably time to rethink this one too.

Users should be able to modify anything that has to do with presentation of data. Columns and rows in tables should be user-modifiable.

I just updated to the latest version and it looks like this was resolved! I went into containers under environment, changed the items per page, signed out, signed back in, and verified items per page setting stayed how I had it set before logging out.

@jmott85, I did not notice that until I checked yesterday. Indeed, Portainer stores the info in the localStorage of the browser; which I had deleted upon browser restart. I do not really like the concept, because the info is attached to the browser and not the user account in Portainer... but probably that is good in most scenarios.
Thank you for the clarification, added Portainer host to the whitelist for localStorage not to be deleted.

It's not fixed.
Yes, the browser is remember the setting now (not in private session). But this was not the request in this issue.
The setting is not remembered for the user that is choosing it.
Login on another machine or browser bring the user back to the false setting.
No, there is no option for users or the admin to change the default value.
So after 5 1/2 years there is no feedback or reaction to the absolutely sensible and legitimate request.

If/when it is decided to make this a config setting it might be good to consider to also save the last used sort order & state filter. Or more generic: the various (last) states on the various screens. But, of course - these are only the wishes from a use who is happy even without these enhancements......

Yeah, so annoying! Keep the 10 as initial default for all I care, but add an option and let users decide themselves. No idea why a lengthy discussion about this must be held. This is a very common feature in many applications/services!

It's a Tampermonkey userscript which will change the default list value from 10 to 50.

Change your server URL (or whatever else) and enjoy (or not).

Great work, thank you! This is what I will use for now to make my life easier since long-term persistence doesn't seem to be a thing, for Portainer at least. I don't love having to install another tool to get some basic functionality working more reliably but I may come up with some ideas of my own where I can leverage Tampermonkey for other pain points I encounter.

I'd rather scroll down than click a next button. Mouse wheel or swipe to scroll is have much better fitts law scores than a next button. Only reason I see to paginate items is if the query is slow (it's not).

Even worse, multiple times I have thought a container was missing when in fact it was just on the second page.

The saved settings seem to be per screen and stored in local storage, which leads to inconsistancy and frustration. I'll come to expect it to be page size 100 but then move to another machine and get misled again.

Making that default list items count configurable per-user (or per portainer instance) rather than in localStorage as suggested by other comments would indeed be great! Any team member could point us on where this could be implemented so someone could tackle this? Thanks!

Note: probably around EnvironmentList.tsx and ItemsPerPageSelector.tsx, where one could retrieve and write to an API saving UserPreferences like itemsPerPage. Don't seem like there is already a store of user preferences for the meantime.

8 years later, this is the thread we end up when we do some googling to fix this annoying default. Is there really no way to simply remember the default user choice? If I set it to 25 or 50 items per page, can't it just remember my choice?
