OpenHive — Open-source Slack alternative built with Supabase

Hey everyone!

I just open-sourced OpenHive, a self-hosted team messaging platform built entirely with Supabase as the backend.

What it does

• Channels and DMs with real-time messaging (Supabase Realtime)
• Threads, mentions, reactions for rich conversations
• File uploads via Supabase Storage
• Authentication powered by Supabase Auth
• Video/audio calls with screen sharing (LiveKit)
• 23 database tables auto-provisioned via the Supabase Management API
• Real-time activity panel

Tech Stack

• Frontend: Next.js 14 (App Router), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, Zustand
• Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL, Auth, Realtime, Storage, Edge Functions)
• Calls: LiveKit WebRTC

How Supabase is used

Supabase is the entire backend:

• PostgreSQL for all 23 tables with RLS policies and SECURITY DEFINER helpers
• Realtime subscriptions on messages, channels, calls, profiles, reactions
• Auth for sign-in/sign-up flows
• Storage for file attachments
• Edge Functions for webhooks, bots, reminders, LiveKit token generation
• Management API for auto-provisioning the entire schema through a setup wizard

Getting Started

git clone https://github.com/arseneHuot/openhive
cd openhive && npm install && npm run dev

Visit http://localhost:3000 and the setup wizard connects to your Supabase project. No Docker needed. Setup takes about 2 minutes.
