VirtualBox, ZSH, tmux copy mode issue

I'm running Windows 11 with VirtualBox 7.0.14. In a VirtualBox VM I'm running Debian with ZSH, using tmux with this option set in tmux.conf:

set-window-option -g mode-keys vi

When I enter copy/edit mode, I need to press Ctrl+Spacebar to start highlighting text instead of just Spacebar. After I highlight the text, I cannot press Enter or any other keystroke to copy the highlighted text to the buffer.

I've tried multiple options:

1. mouse copy to buffer
2. tmux plugin manager with tmux-yank
3. highlighting the text then running "tmux showb | xclip -i -selection clipboard"
4. capture-pane
5. setting capture keys in tmux.conf (binding y as the copy to buffer key)

I'm not sure what is needed to get this to work.
