Seeking mentors and project ideas for Google Summer of Code 2025!

tl;dr

• we're applying for Google Summer of Code 2025 🎉 due Feb 11
• if you would like to be involved with mentoring contributors (even if only a little), please let me know!
• if you have project ideas for Typelevel org or affiliate projects (or even an inkling of an idea), let's talk!

I want our application to reflect that Typelevel is vibrant with a culture of teaching and learning together. If you are active on GitHub and/or Discord, then you are already a de facto mentor in our community :) so please consider adding your name to our application ❤️

Ideally each of our projects will have a couple primary mentors and some number of additional supporting mentors.

• Primary mentors have good knowledge of the project and are available to contributors for 2–3 hours a week over the coding period June–August e.g. pair-programming, PR review, chat.
• Supporting mentors are interested in the project and want to help out when and where they can :)

Why mentor?

1. It is rewarding to help grow the diversity of our open source community. The results of the 2023 Scala Survey suggest we currently skew heavily towards advanced, long-time Scala developers. Let's change that together :)

2. GSoC contributors Get Shit Done. Check out the past projects, which made sophisticated and impactful contributions to the Typelevel ecosystem.

3. Make friendships with other Typelevel developers. Helping to mentor a contributor is also wonderful opportunity to hang out with and get to know better your fellow mentors! In addition, last year we organized two virtual meetups to welcome our contributors and give them the opportunity to share their work with the community.

4. Raise money for Typelevel. Google will pay Typelevel a small stipend for every contributor that we mentor.

Project: "ScalaHub" – A Collaborative Learning Platform for Scala Developers

Overview:

ScalaHub is an open-source, full-stack web platform designed to help developers of all levels learn Scala through interactive tutorials, coding challenges, and real-world project collaborations. The platform will integrate with GitHub and Discord to allow seamless discussions and mentorship.

Key Features:

• Interactive Learning Modules: Step-by-step Scala tutorials with live coding environments.
• Real-Time Collaboration: Pair-programming features, similar to Google Docs for code.
• Project Matchmaking: Connect developers with open-source Scala projects based on interests and skill levels.
• Mentor Dashboard: Allow experienced developers to track and guide mentees' progress.
• Gamification & Rewards: Badges, leaderboards, and achievements for learning milestones.

Tech Stack:

• Frontend: React.js (Next.js) with Tailwind CSS
• Backend: Scala with Play Framework or ZIO
• Database: PostgreSQL with Prisma or Slick
• Authentication: GitHub OAuth & Discord integration
• Deployment: Docker + Kubernetes
