Issues with QGIS

Not posting this as an issue since the error may well be on my side:

This is what the map looks like when I add a tile server layer in QGIS (either using the official VersaTiles server or my own self-hosted one). The ocean is not displayed, and something weird is going on with islands:

Why is this and how can I fix it? I tried this with another tile server (not VersaTiles) and there the ocean was imported as a polygon.

It is only at 1:25000 zoom when the water polygons finally load.
