AliasVault is open-source software. Source code made available under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0) may be used, modified, and distributed in accordance with that license.
The AGPL-3.0 applies only to software and other materials that AliasVault expressly makes available under that license. It does not, merely because materials are included with, displayed by, or published alongside the software, grant permission to use AliasVault trademarks, logos, branding, website content, social-media assets, marketing materials, graphics, videos, or other non-software content (see Sections 7 and 8).
This policy explains how the AliasVault name, logos, and other brand identifiers may be used.
Ownership. AliasVault is a product of XIVISOFT, a sole proprietorship operated by Leendert de Borst and registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (KVK) under number 51592193. XIVISOFT owns the AliasVault Marks described in Section 2. In this policy, "AliasVault" refers to the AliasVault project and software and, where the context concerns ownership of or permission to use the AliasVault Marks, to XIVISOFT.
The AliasVault trademarks include, without limitation:
- the name AliasVault;
- the AliasVault logos;
- AliasVault icons and other distinctive brand graphics;
- AliasVault slogans and other distinctive brand identifiers; and
- other names, logos, or brand identifiers that AliasVault may designate as trademarks from time to time.
These are referred to collectively in this policy as the "AliasVault Marks."
Use of AliasVault software under the AGPL-3.0 does not grant any license or other right to use the AliasVault Marks except as expressly stated in this policy or as otherwise permitted by applicable law.
You may use the AliasVault name in a truthful and non-misleading manner to refer to the AliasVault project or software.
For example, you may generally:
- state that your software is based on, derived from, or is a fork of AliasVault;
- state that your product or service is compatible with AliasVault, where factually accurate;
- link to the official AliasVault project or website;
- discuss, review, criticize, or report on AliasVault;
- identify AliasVault when describing the origin of source code used in your project;
- identify AliasVault in the name of an independent community, discussion forum, or integration, where the reference is truthful and does not suggest that it is operated or authorized by AliasVault; and
- retain copyright, license, attribution, and other notices where required by the AGPL-3.0 or another applicable license.
Any such use must not suggest that your project, product, service, or organization is official, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by AliasVault when it is not.
Running and redistributing unmodified AliasVault. You may run an unmodified instance of AliasVault, for yourself, your household, or your organization, with the built-in AliasVault names and logos intact, including at your own domain. You may also redistribute unmodified copies of the official AliasVault software under the AliasVault name, provided that you do not alter the software or its branding and do not suggest that your distribution channel is operated by AliasVault. The corresponding permission to reproduce the brand assets themselves is set out in Section 7.
Offering AliasVault to third parties as a hosted or managed service is addressed separately in Section 5.
The AGPL-3.0 may permit you to copy, modify, and redistribute AliasVault software in accordance with its terms. These rights do not automatically include the right to use the AliasVault Marks for your modified version, distribution, product, or service.
If you distribute or operate a modified version or fork of AliasVault, you should use a name and branding that clearly distinguish it from the official AliasVault project.
You may truthfully describe its relationship to AliasVault, for example:
"Based on the AliasVault open-source project."
or:
"A fork of AliasVault."
However, you may not present an independent or modified version in a manner that is likely to cause users to believe that it is official, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by AliasVault.
The AGPL-3.0 permits you to run AliasVault, including a modified version, and to make it available to others over a network in accordance with its terms. Those software rights do not include any right to use the AliasVault Marks as the name, branding, or domain name of the service you operate. This applies whether or not the software you run has been modified, and whether or not the service is offered for a fee.
The official hosted AliasVault service is operated only by AliasVault. An independent hosted or managed service must be offered under its own distinct name and branding, must not be presented as official, and must state that it is not operated by or affiliated with AliasVault.
Referential use by hosting, platform, and marketplace providers. You may truthfully identify AliasVault as the software that your service installs, deploys, hosts, or manages, most often as a marketplace, catalogue, or application-directory listing, and in such a listing you may use an unmodified AliasVault logo solely to identify the application being offered. In both cases an AliasVault Mark must appear as a reference to the software, and not as the name, brand, or logo of your service, company, or platform, which must be identified under its own name and branding.
Unless otherwise permitted by applicable law or by this policy, you must obtain prior written permission from AliasVault before:
- using an AliasVault Mark in the name, branding, domain name, app-store or extension-marketplace listing, or online-account name of an independent product, project, company, service, or organization. This includes hosted and managed services (see Section 5), for example "AliasVault Hosting", "AliasVault Cloud", "Managed AliasVault", or "AliasVault as a Service", and independent forks, for example "AliasVault Pro" or "AliasVault Enterprise";
- using an AliasVault logo as the logo, icon, or favicon of another product, project, service, website, platform, or organization;
- producing, distributing, or selling merchandise bearing the AliasVault Marks;
- using AliasVault Marks in advertising or promotional materials in a manner that suggests an official relationship with AliasVault; or
- adopting branding that is confusingly similar to the AliasVault Marks in a manner likely to cause confusion regarding source, sponsorship, or affiliation.
Permission may be subject to additional conditions.
AliasVault logos, icons, and other brand assets are separate from the open-source license applicable to AliasVault software.
Unless expressly stated otherwise, AliasVault logos, icons, distinctive brand graphics, social-media graphics, promotional graphics, banners, marketing artwork, brand templates, and similar brand assets are not licensed under the AGPL-3.0, including where such materials:
- appear within the AliasVault application;
- are included in an AliasVault source-code repository;
- are stored alongside AGPL-licensed source code;
- appear in AliasVault documentation; or
- are publicly accessible through an AliasVault website or social-media account.
Their inclusion or public availability does not, by itself, grant permission to reproduce, modify, redistribute, or use them as branding for another product, service, project, or organization.
Limited permission for unmodified copies. AliasVault grants a limited, revocable permission to reproduce and redistribute the brand assets contained in an AliasVault source-code repository solely as part of an unmodified copy of AliasVault, and solely to the extent necessary to build, run, or redistribute that unmodified copy. If you distribute or operate a modified version or fork, you must replace or remove these assets. A separate limited permission applies to marketplace and catalogue listings; see Section 5.
Where use of an AliasVault logo or brand asset is permitted, it must not be used in a manner that falsely suggests that a product, service, or organization is official, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by AliasVault.
Unless expressly licensed otherwise, AliasVault website content, articles, written materials, illustrations, graphics, videos, marketing materials, social-media content, and other non-software materials are not licensed under the AGPL-3.0 merely because they relate to AliasVault or are published together with AliasVault software. Such materials may be protected by copyright and other applicable intellectual property laws.
Documentation contributed to an AliasVault source-code repository is licensed under the AGPL-3.0 in accordance with the project's contribution terms. This does not extend to the AliasVault Marks or to the brand assets described in Section 7, which remain subject to this policy wherever they appear, including within documentation.
Where AliasVault expressly publishes particular documentation or other materials under a separate license, use of those materials will be governed by that separate license.
Nothing in this section is intended to restrict uses that are permitted by applicable law.
You may generally use reasonable screenshots of AliasVault for purposes such as discussion, documentation, education, reviews, tutorials, news reporting, or demonstrating compatibility, subject to applicable law.
Such use must not falsely suggest that the accompanying product, service, or publication is official, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by AliasVault.
Third-party content visible within a screenshot may be subject to separate rights.
This Trademark Policy governs use of the AliasVault Marks and explains the distinction between AliasVault's open-source software and its branding and other materials.
It does not modify or reduce any rights granted under the AGPL-3.0 for software or other materials that AliasVault has expressly made available under that license. Rights to use the software and rights to use the AliasVault Marks, branding, and separately protected content are distinct.
Use of AliasVault software, contribution to the AliasVault project, compatibility with AliasVault, or compliance with the AGPL-3.0 does not by itself mean that a person, organization, product, service, or modified version is official, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by AliasVault. You must not represent otherwise without prior written authorization from AliasVault.
This policy applies only to trademarks, branding, and other materials owned or controlled by AliasVault.
Names, logos, trademarks, content, and other materials belonging to third parties remain subject to the rights and policies of their respective owners.
If you would like to use an AliasVault Mark or brand asset in a way that is not permitted by this policy, please contact:
Your request should describe what you wish to use, how it will be used, and where it will appear.
Permission must be obtained in writing before making the proposed use where permission is required.
Except for rights expressly granted under this policy, AliasVault reserves all rights in the AliasVault Marks.
Nothing in this policy transfers ownership of any AliasVault Mark or creates any partnership, agency, sponsorship, endorsement, or other relationship with AliasVault.
AliasVault may update this Trademark Policy from time to time. The current version will be made available through the official AliasVault website or publicly published project resources.
Changes to this Trademark Policy do not alter the terms of the AGPL-3.0 applicable to software already made available under that license.
