The defaults of the Beamer inspired themes have font sizes that might be hard to follow and encourage information overload -- often more of a reading experience than attending a talk experience. What's the recommended way to increase font sizes, keeping all the proportions as-is?

I 100% agree with this! This is a pitfall that Slipshow almost encourages... I'll need to mitigate this at some point...

I think adding the following somewhere in your markdown input should do it:

  #slipshow-content {
    font-size: 1.2em;
  }
</style>

where 1.2em can be adjusted (but the em unit should be kept).
