This reverts commit 95a34c5.
Not sure if this will actually be useful/safe, but there had been past discussion of reverting this change since it was so large, broken, and past attempts to fix the functionality seemed to lead to a long tail of fixes.
Pushing to at least see if tests pass/fail.
