The current design for nested column headers (https://www.patternfly.org/components/table/#nested-column-headers) requires a lot of whitespace and column titles of consistent length in order to maintain clear visual groupings. This design quickly loses clarity in dense, tightly spaced tables.
A new design with clearer visual delineation of column headers, sub-headers, and groupings would be useful for information-dense tables such as inventories. An expand/collapse option would also help with grouping and freeing up table space.
@bekah-stephens previously did some concepts for this (link below) that I'd be happy to keep working on. I also came up with a concept that uses background colors to distinguish headers from sub-headers, but more work is needed to determine how this might appear across different contrast modes. I would love to work with Patternfly on coming up with a new nested column header.
