Meta Image Scoring in SEO Plugin

Context:

Social platforms such as LinkedIn and Meta provide specific recommendations for images used with the Open Graph protocol. These recommendations include minimum dimensions, recommended dimensions, recommended aspect ratios, and maximum file sizes (Meta
, LinkedIn).

Currently, the Payload CMS SEO plugin provides scoring for the Tile and Description fields but does not provide feedback on the Meta Image field. Adding scoring for this field would give users actionable guidance to optimize their Open Graph images for social sharing.

Proposal:

Introduce a scoring system for the Meta Image field that evaluates how closely an uploaded image aligns with Open Graph recommendations. The scoring could be based on either:

• Combined recommendations from multiple social platforms
• Single-provider recommendations for simplicity (e.g., Meta or LinkedIn)

Scoring Guidelines (example):

• 0 points: Image dimensions below minimum requirements
• 0 points: Image file size exceeds maximum limit
• 0–50 points: Aspect ratio approaches recommended values
• 0–50 points: Width and height approach recommended dimensions

Outcome:

This scoring system would provide immediate, quantifiable feedback to users, aligning the Meta Image field with the existing scoring system for Tile and Description. This would encourage optimized image uploads for better social media presentation and improved link previews.
