Paywall Pattern Taxonomy

This document defines the main paywall patterns used in the Open Paywall Gallery.

Free Trial Soft Paywall

A paywall that presents premium value and lets users start with a free trial.

Common traits:

  • Trial CTA
  • Benefit-led copy
  • Reduced upfront risk
  • Often paired with annual plan anchoring

Hard Paywall

A paywall that blocks access until the user subscribes.

Common traits:

  • No meaningful free path
  • Strong CTA
  • High conversion pressure
  • Often used after onboarding or personalization

Multi-Offer Paywall

A paywall that presents multiple subscription plans, tiers, or offer types.

Common traits:

  • Multiple plan cards
  • Monthly, annual, or weekly options
  • Best-value badges
  • Feature or benefit comparison

Promotional Paywall

A paywall that highlights a limited-time discount or special offer.

Common traits:

  • Discount messaging
  • Urgency
  • Countdown or one-time offer language
  • Often shown after paywall close or during reactivation

Onboarding Paywall

A paywall shown during or immediately after onboarding.

Common traits:

  • Personalized setup
  • Result preview
  • Progress completion
  • Subscription offer shown before full product access
