Gigantic sidebar in the beta1

Hi, on the beta 1, the sidebar now takes more than half the screen estate on 2560x1440, no matter how much you squeeze it to the right. This is a major regression that makes the application barely usable.

Maybe you could get some UI/UX ideas from Inkscape's new Object Properties dock? It's considerably minimal in size and largely follows the design patterns in Figma and Penpot:

When you need to change something, you either edit a field directly or click on a drop-down list to open a property-specific popover:

In preferences, there is a new "compact sidebar width". This essentially just stacks the tabs. For some reason, Gnome/Adwaita needs a considerable amount of padding on the start and end of the tab text. I couldn't find a way to override these settings with CSS or otherwise.

There are definitely other ways to handle this, I'm just not in love with the other options so far. Forcing users to manage the sidebar tabs seems a bit overwhelming. Takes you out of the flow pretty quickly. The only "good" alternative would be to create some icons to represent each tab. I'm not a good icon designer though. :)

I have created an alternative stack switcher widget which displays nearly the same but allows the switcher to be compact. Removed "compact-sidebar-width" preference option as this will no longer be necessary and just adds confusion to the UI/preferences.

The change is in the beta branch and will be applied to the 2.0.0-beta2 pre-release.
