VS Code extension: "parsing error: Cannot read file '/tsconfig.json'." #1200

Describe the bug
Recently the VS Code extension has started misbehaving. It highlights entire files with error squiggles and gives the message "VS Code extension: "parsing error: Cannot read file '/tsconfig.json'." My tsconfig.json is at the root of the repository and the CLI version of Betterer never has complaints.

To Reproduce
Unfortunately I don't have something I can share, it's in a private work repository. I do notice that the Betterer extension on the bottom of the screen has a spinner pretty much constantly though, and it never really seems to resolve, even if I'm just leaving VS Code alone and not opening any new files.

The latest log in the output for the extension is

[Info - 9:32:21 AM] Validator: Not running Betterer, no documents need updating.
[Info - 9:32:21 AM] Validator: Restoring CWD to "/".

but it still shows a spinner on the UI.

Just a lot of weird behavior that only popped up within the last week or so.

Expected behavior
No file-wide error squiggles saying it can't find tsconfig.json

Versions (please complete the following information):

  • OS: MacOS
  • Betterer Version: 5.4.0 for the library, 5.2.1 for the extension
  • Node Version: 18.20.2
