odc-stac will open a set of pystac Items as an xarray, and handles a broad range of use cases.

ODC STAC will return a multi dimensional XArray with the item dates on the time axis. ODC STAC is great, and XArray is very handy and I encourage everyone to explore it. However, for some use cases it is overkill.

This library fills a gap and offers a handy solution to open STAC ItemCollections directly using rasterio. It will return DatasetReader to opens the ItemCollection as a 2d numpy array containing all items. It does so by pushing down all the IO logic into the GDAL driver, which makes it highly efficient. I believe, this library might help odc.stac to become slightly faster, too?

ODC STAC already does all the loading using Rasterio/GDAL.

I don't know enought about the low-level details to know if there are performance improvements available!
