Far too often I see users getting confused when they first purchased a VPS which only comes with a root user, and they don't know how to set up an alternative user to manage PM. As a result, they run everything as root, which is of course stupid and dangerous. However, we aren't providing them with suitable instructions on how better to do this.

A good option is cloud-init. It comes preinstalled on most DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, Scaleway, AWS, and Google Cloud servers. cloud-init can create users, set permissions, run scripts and more. It seems like the easy way to get started without going through a bunch of tutorials.

@nathfreder this is besides the point. Outsourcing the setup process isn't helpful for people who can't or don't want to use those tools.
