Thank you for bringing this up, @vtorri. I am not aware about anybody in our group making any competitive analysis; well... not recently, anyway... I'm saying this because I used to do some benchmarking, myself, decades ago, on my own PNG-Tech website: In the recent years, my main focus with libpng was to drive the implementation to the point of being feature-complete, not only in terms of standard support (PNG Specification version 3), but also performance-wise, supporting optimized SIMD implementations on the present-day architectures. And last but most certainly not least, the occasional test improvements and defect fixes. Back to this topic: While I don't have any information to add, for now, I'm watching the discussion with interest. |

is there a benchmark (speed and memory usage for same output size) vs different implementations (see for example https://nigeltao.github.io/blog/2021/fastest-safest-png-decoder.html in the summary at the beginning for some examples of libpng alternatives), and also comparison with the QOI file format and zigimg ?
