Why does epoll_close get executed every time when SocketImpl::poll is called?

bool SocketImpl::poll(const Poco::Timespan& timeout, int mode)
{
   int epollfd = epoll_create(1);
   ...
   epoll_wait();
   ...
   ::close(epollfd); // Wouldn't this affect performance?
}

This troubles me greatly, and I am eager to find an answer. Thank you very much!

As it is now, close obviously has to be called because epollfd is a stack variable. To survive subsequent calls, it should become a member variable.

Thank you for your answer. This is also my question—why isn't the epollfd set as a member variable in POCO's SocketImpl? Repeatedly creating and destroying epollfd could impact performance, couldn't it

I'd guess because we do not want to always carry another file descriptor, in addition to the socket one, with every socket

FWIW, if you want epoll fd not to be closed, there's PollSet
