Problems with hibernation, laptop only

I am having minor issues with sleep / hibernation on my laptop. I am seeing one of 2 behaviors when I have problems, perhaps 20% of the time, so inconsistent, sleep/hibernation usually work just fine, but ...

1. I get the cosmic greeter, but after I log in the mouse is frozen. It unlocks if I switch to a console, log in then switch back to the cosmic desktop. I can hear the disc spin up.

2. Blank screen . This does not resolve switching to a console, but, is resolved by restarting the cosmic greeter.
