When I first booted the Beta ISO from a USB stick the Welcome and install screen was beyond sluggish, and I couldn't really find out why. But it seems from looking at 'htop' that there was some sort of background formatting process happening and using 100% of one of my CPU cores.
I guess this was caused by that Welcome first install screen and I guess it's not properly multi-threaded, but these are just guesses.
After more than a few minutes (I had used a large USD drive because it was what I had handy) the Welcome screen finally started being responsive again and the formatting seemed over... But it was unresponsive for minutes before that.
PS: not sure if this belongs in https://github.com/pop-os/installer or here?
