Audio broken after update to kernel 6.5.4 on Dell XPS 13

Issue/Bug Description:
My Dell XPS 13 Plus (originally with Ubuntu 22.04 installed) audio fails after installing kernel 6.5.4. All works OK if rolling back to kernel 6.4.6. In Settings/Sound, there's only a Dummy output device, but no sound is produced. This is basically the same issue reported here.

Steps to reproduce (if you know):
Update to latest kernel
Reboot
Check that audio doesn't work

Expected behavior:
Audio should work with Output device Speaker sof-soundwire

Adding a +1 to this issue. I'm the OP from the reddit post and haven't had working onboard sound for my XPS 13 Plus since upgrading kernel to 6.5.4. Booting the 6.4.6 kernel fixes the issue and my onboard sound device properly shows up.

I have tested plugging in a usb headset with the 6.5.4 kernel and that works properly and shows up as a valid sound output.

Thanks @jrohland --- I have seen this behaviour too. If I use my bluetooth headset, it works OK even with the 6.5.4 kernel, but the default audio is broken.

I also tried to flash a USB with a fresh Pop OS installation (the newest from the main website, which does include the 6.5.4 kernel) but when I booted into it, the sound was broken again.

Another quick update from me --- I have seen that some updates for pipewire have been released. This, alas, doesn't fix the issue on kernel 6.5.4...

This will be a learning experience for me. I don't have much to contribute (though I will try below) but I didn't see a +1 button on GitHub, so I am replying. Please let me know if there is a better way to indicate that this problem affects me too.

I have the same audio problem with my XPS 13 after the 6.5.4 update.

BTW: updating the kernel to mainline 6.5.7 does not solve this issue. The newest kernel compiles OK, but then the audio is still set to dummy...

Updating to 6.5.6-7600506 does not fix the problem. Nor does this. Kernel 6.4.6 still works OK for the audio (but the webcam doesn't...)

Not to distract from the audio issue but I have been able to get my webcam to work with help from this thread: intel/ipu6-drivers#22 (comment)

Thanks, @jrohland --- the webcam is recognised with the commands you point out, but it only shows a black screen... There may be more down that thread (which I haven't read fully yet), but no joy on this either... :-(

Also tried restarting v4l2-relayd a few times as mentioned on the thread, but no luck.

@giabaio I tried a few things from that thread so I'm not sure which else did the trick aside from the apt commands.

Pretty sure I tried copying the firmware binaries like from this comment: intel/ipu6-drivers#22 (comment)

I also built the drivers from https://github.com/intel/ipu6-drivers using dkms (last option in the readme).

Hopefully one of those steps will help you out.

I updated to 6.5.6 today and still have the audio issue. I tried the fix in this thread to no luck: pipewire-debian/pipewire-debian#49 (comment)

Now I don't have access to the 6.4.6 kernel since the boot menu is now booting 6.5.4 as the previous kernel option. I need to figure out how to get that kernel back so I can have sound.
