GRUB recovery menu networking

Issue/Bug Description

GRUB recovery menu's 'Networking' choice does not enable a fully working network.

Steps to reproduce (if you know)

Enter into the GRUB recovery menu, then choose networking, then drop to a root prompt, and try to run apt update. It will fail with DNS lookup errors.

Expected behavior

Successful networking commands such as 'apt update'

Other Notes

The file /etc/resolv.conf needs edited manually to contain a nameserver. Typically, 'nameserver 8.8.8.8' is used, but any valid DNS server can be used.

Are you getting other DNS info but not a name server? Is this via wired or wireless?

Both wired and wireless. The system doesn't have a functioning DNS setup. No DNS queries will work. This is confirmed by:

dig google.com
fails
dig @8.8.8.8 google.com
succeeds.

This is likely because systemd-resolved.service isn't running or isn't configured correctly in recovery mode.

I don't understand your question. What other DNS info would we get without a name server?

DHCP rather. You're getting IP and subnet but no DNS server?

DHCP is being provided correctly. The resolvconf program and systemd-resolver.service are not functional in recovery mode. They are used to provide a DNS resolver, and the correct /etc/resolv.conf file when booted normally.
