Today the ThinkPad line is owned and manufactured by Lenovo. However, this line originated with IBM back in 1992, and wasn't sold to Lenovo until 2009. The T series has historically been (and appears to remain today) a line of moderate to high performance laptops marketed towards the business sector rather than consumers. As such they can be quite powerful and durable machines, with many components replaceable or upgradable for their enterprise customers.

The first line of T series laptops began with the T20 through the T23 in 2002. This was followed by the T30, then the T40 in 2003. The "p" suffix was first available on the T40p that year, which was the "performance" variant of the Thinkpad line. This pattern continued all the way up through 2005 with the launch of the T43 and T43p, which were the last models to be designed and manufactured by IBM. **add wikipedia citation**

In 2006 Lenovo released the T60 and T60p, the first Thinkpad models they designed and manufactured. From there came the T61 and T61p in 2007, and by 2008 the T400, the beginning of the well-known T4xx (and T5xx) series of Thinpads that Lenovo continued through 2019 and concluded with the T490, T495, and T590.
