This is something that has been requested by users/user tests multiple times over years in my experience. Would be great to have it as an out of the box option.

I agree! It is also an increasingly commonplace convention implemented by other discovery platforms.

The trick for still getting accurate filters from the search request is set a tag for every fq:

Then when requesting filters, for each one exclude that key:
