The option to select do not display featured image in post is only available once a news post has been published. So you have to publish and then select do not display and update.

Fix is in and a build is going for this.

Root cause: The checkbox was being dropped from the featured image meta box after image selection because hide_featured_image() relied on global $post, which is null inside the AJAX handler WordPress uses to refresh the meta box when an image is picked. With no post object, the function returned the content unchanged — so the checkbox was never in the DOM when the post was first published and could never be submitted.

A secondary issue: wp_nonce_field() was echoing into that same AJAX response body, corrupting it.

What was fixed (modules/proud-layout/proud-layout.php):

• Registered admin_post_thumbnail_html filter with 10, 2 to receive $post_id; replaced global $post with get_post( $post_id ) so it works in both normal page load and AJAX context
• Passed $echo = false to wp_nonce_field() and appended its return value to $content
• Added autosave/revision guards and nonce verification to save_featured_image_meta(); switched $_REQUEST → $_POST
• Fixed checkbox value attribute to always be "1"

11 PHPUnit tests added covering all of the above.
