Version 1.1 – as of 19 November 2025 Licensor: SAmedia/Sandra Weidmann
These license terms (the "Aurelia Web Relay License", or "AWRL") are a legal agreement between Sandra Weidmann (the "Licensor") and any natural or legal person ("You" or the "User") who uses the Software as defined below.
These license terms govern the use of the software "Aurelia Web Relay", including its source code, documentation, configuration files, example scripts, and other related files (together, the "Software"). The Software is a FastAPI gateway for local language models with optional web research, time anchoring, and SSE streaming.
The AWRL makes the Software available in source-available form, but exclusively for non-commercial purposes. Commercial use – including, but not limited to, SaaS, hosting, sale, closed integrations, and any form of monetization – is expressly prohibited, unless a separate written authorization from the Licensor has been obtained.
Note on classification: This license permits inspection and modification of the source code, but contains a non-commercial restriction and is therefore not an open-source license in the technical sense as recognized by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). For the avoidance of doubt, the Software is made available under a source-available, non-commercial license and does not qualify as "Open Source" under the Open Source Definition of the Open Source Initiative (OSI). You must not describe, market or represent the Software or any Derived Work as "Open Source" within the meaning of the OSI Open Source Definition.
For the purposes of this license, the following terms apply:
1.1 "Licensor" Sandra Weidmann, as the original author and rights holder of the Software "Aurelia Web Relay", and any legal successors or permitted assignees.
1.2 "You" / "User" The natural or legal person who uses, copies, modifies, or distributes the Software.
1.3 "Software" All source code provided by the Licensor, together with the associated documentation, configuration files, scripts, and other files that are published under the AWRL, in each case in the form released by the Licensor, including any updates or bug fixes.
1.4 "Derived Work" / "Derivative" Any work that, within the meaning of applicable copyright law, is based upon or incorporates the Software or any part thereof, including without limitation any adaptation, modification, extension, translation, integration or other derivative work, whether or not the original code remains recognizable.
1.5 "Non-Commercial Use" A use is Non-Commercial if and only if it:
- (a) falls exclusively within one or more of the following categories: private, academic or non-profit use as described below; and
- (b) does not have the purpose of obtaining, and does not in fact result in more than incidental Economic Advantage (as defined in Section 1.8) for You or any third party.
Private use means personal, experimental or hobby use by natural persons in their private capacity and outside any trade, business, craft or profession, without remuneration, without advertising- or sponsorship-based funding and without using the Software to provide services or outputs to third parties against payment, donations linked to such services, or any expectation of Economic Advantage.
Academic use means use for teaching, study or research at a recognised educational or research institution, provided that the Software or any service based on it is not offered as a paid or advertising-, sponsorship- or data-financed service and is not used in the context of commercial contract research, in projects commissioned or co-funded by commercial third parties with preferential rights to the results, or for third parties in return for payment.
Non-profit use means use by non-commercial, charitable or non-profit organisations to pursue their statutory, non-commercial purposes, provided that no fees, charges, donations, membership fees or similar contributions are charged or solicited in connection with access to the Software or any service based on it, no advertising-, sponsorship- or data-based funding is used in connection with such access and no Economic Advantage beyond the pursuit of the non-profit purpose is sought.
For the avoidance of doubt and without prejudice to Section 1.6, a use is in particular no longer Non-Commercial if it is primarily directed at revenue, profit, cost recovery through ongoing fees, advertising, brand or image building, user acquisition, data monetisation, or other Economic Advantages.
1.6 "Commercial Use" "Commercial Use" means any use of the Software that is not Non-Commercial Use within the meaning of Section 1.5. Commercial Use includes in particular, without limitation:
- any use by or on behalf of a business, company, start-up, self-employed person, freelancer, public authority or other organisation in the context of its economic or public-service activities, whether internal or external;
- the provision of the Software or any Derived Work as a service (e.g., SaaS, API, hosting, chatbot, plugin), irrespective of whether end users pay directly or the service is monetised through advertising, data exploitation, sponsorship, donations, membership fees, lead generation or similar mechanisms;
- integration into commercial, proprietary, or closed-source software that is distributed, licensed, sold, or used as part of a paid or monetised offering;
- use in internal business processes where such use is aimed at or results in revenue, profit, cost savings, efficiency gains, or any other Economic Advantage;
- any form of sale, rental, leasing, paid licensing, or distribution of the Software or any Derived Work.
In cases of doubt, a use shall be deemed Commercial Use if You obtain or seek to obtain any Economic Advantage from it.
1.7 "Distribution" "Distribution" means any form of dissemination, making available, or provision of the Software or a Derived Work to third parties, including by uploading to a public repository, publishing in package or app stores, hosting it as a service or making it available on servers or networked systems accessible by persons other than the developer(s) themselves. Purely local use by You on systems under Your exclusive control does not constitute Distribution.
1.8 "Economic Advantage" "Economic Advantage" means any direct or indirect financial or economic benefit, including but not limited to revenue, profit, remuneration, salaries, cost savings, increased efficiency, acquisition or retention of customers or users, strengthening of brand or reputation, creation of monetisable data or intellectual property, or the enabling or facilitation of any of the foregoing.
Subject to Your full and continuing compliance with this License, the Licensor grants You a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non-sublicensable license to:
- download, install, run, and otherwise use the Software for Non-Commercial Use only;
- reproduce copies of the Software for Non-Commercial Use;
- modify the Software and create Derived Works for Non-Commercial Use; and
- distribute the Software and Derived Works for Non-Commercial Use in accordance with Section 6.
No rights are granted for Commercial Use within the meaning of Section 1.6. Commercial Use is not covered by this grant and is only permitted on the basis of a separate written license agreement with the Licensor.
Any rights not expressly granted under this License are reserved by the Licensor.
Subject to compliance with all other license provisions, the following uses are in particular permitted:
3.1 Private Use
- running the Software on a private computer or home server for Your own experiments, personal projects, or learning purposes;
- forks and modifications in Your own private repository, as long as no Commercial Use is made;
- sharing the source code with friends or in non-commercial study groups.
3.2 Academic Use
- use of the Software in courses, exercises, or seminars, provided that neither the Software nor any service based on it is offered for a fee or financed by advertising, sponsorship or data monetisation;
- use in the context of scientific research, including publication of research results, provided that the Software is not provided as a paid or monetised service and no commercial contract research for third parties is carried out;
- operation of an instance that is not publicly advertised for students or researchers of an institution for teaching and research purposes without monetisation.
3.3 Non-Profit Use
- use by non-profit organisations to pursue their statutory, non-commercial purposes, provided that no fees, charges, donations, membership fees or advertising-related revenues are collected or solicited in connection with the provision of the Software or any service based on it and no Economic Advantage beyond the pursuit of the non-profit purpose is sought.
These examples are not exhaustive; in cases of doubt, Sections 1.5 and 1.6 are decisive.
4.1 The Software is made available exclusively for Non-Commercial Use within the meaning of this License.
4.2 Any Commercial Use is strictly prohibited without a separate, prior, and explicit written authorization from the Licensor.
4.3 Any written authorization may be subject to additional terms and fees and will be granted or refused solely at the Licensor's discretion.
4.4 You may not circumvent the Non-Commercial Use restriction, including by splitting activities between multiple entities, by arranging for third parties to operate the Software on Your behalf, or by combining the Software with other components in a way that results in Commercial Use while formally claiming Non-Commercial Use of the Software.
Without the Licensor's express written consent, the following in particular are not permitted:
5.1 SaaS / Hosting / API Offerings
- provision of the Software or Derived Works as a publicly or privately accessible online service (e.g., web app, API, chatbot, “AI gateway”);
- operation of the Software as a service for third parties, regardless of whether a fee is charged, if an Economic Advantage (including brand building, lead generation, advertising revenue, data exploitation, donations or membership fees linked to the service) is pursued or achieved thereby.
5.2 Integration into Products, Tools, or Platforms
- integration of the Software or Derived Works into commercial products;
- integration into closed-source or proprietary software that is sold, licensed, rented, or provided as a service;
- use as a core component in tools, plug-ins, add-ons, or integrations that are provided to customers, clients, or third parties – whether for a fee or as part of a paid or monetised overall offering.
5.3 Sale, Resale, Sub-Licensing
- sale of copies of the Software or Derived Works;
- sub-licensing or re-licensing the Software or any Derived Work under terms that permit Commercial Use or that weaken or remove the non-commercial restriction set out in this License;
- distribution in app stores, marketplaces, or package registries where this occurs as part of commercial offerings or services.
5.4 Internal Corporate Use for Business Purposes
- use of the Software in companies or organisations to support operational business, automation, customer interaction, process optimization, or product development with the intention of generating profit or other Economic Advantage;
- use in the context of paid projects (e.g., consulting engagements, freelance assignments, integration projects), even if the Software itself is not charged for separately.
5.5 Monetization Through Advertising, Data, Donations or Paywalls
- provision of a service based on the Software that is financed through advertising, affiliate programs, sponsorship, donations, membership fees, paywalls, premium plans, or data analysis;
- use of the Software to collect data that is used for commercial purposes (e.g., profiling, marketing, product improvement in commercial products).
5.6 Circumvention and Indirect Use
You may not instruct or allow any third party to use the Software for You in a manner that would constitute Commercial Use if carried out by You, nor may You participate in any scheme or arrangement designed to circumvent the non-commercial restrictions of this License.
6.1 You may modify, extend, or fork the Software and create Derived Works for Non-Commercial Use.
6.2 Any Distribution of the Software or a Derived Work (in source or object form) – including in a non-commercial context – is subject to the following conditions:
- the Software and any Derived Work must be licensed either (i) under this AWRL, or (ii) under another written license that is at least as restrictive as this AWRL with respect to Non-Commercial Use, attribution, warranty disclaimer and limitation of liability and that does not grant any right to Commercial Use as defined in Sections 1.6 and 5;
- the original license text of the AWRL (this file) must be included unchanged or clearly linked and must remain applicable at least to those parts of the code that originate from the Software;
- changes must be clearly indicated (e.g., by a notice in the README or in the relevant files, such as “Derived from Aurelia Web Relay – modifications by [Your Name]”).
6.3 You are not permitted to re-license the Software or Derived Works in such a way that Commercial Use is permitted without the consent of the Licensor. Any purported grant of rights for Commercial Use under a different license shall be null and void as between You and the Licensor.
6.4 This License does not include any permission to use the Licensor's trademarks, logos, or other identifiers (see Section 7.3).
6.5 This Section 6 applies only to the Software and to Derived Works of the Software. It does not require You to apply the AWRL to independent third-party components that are merely aggregated, linked or combined with the Software and that remain governed by their own licenses.
7.1 For any use of the Software or Derived Works that goes beyond purely private experimental use (e.g., publication of code, provision in academic contexts), You must provide a clear attribution that includes at least the following:
- the name of the Software: “Aurelia Web Relay”,
- a reference to the license: “Aurelia Web Relay License (AWRL)”,
- a reference to the original author and Licensor, e.g.: “Originally developed by Sandra Weidmann as Aurelia Web Relay.”
7.2 If You provide the Software in a user interface (UI) in a Non-Commercial context (e.g., in a demo for teaching purposes), the attribution must, where technically feasible, be reasonably visible to end users, e.g., in the footer, in an “About” section, or in the help menu, for example:
“Powered by Aurelia Web Relay (AWRL).”
7.3 This License grants no trademark rights. In particular, You do not obtain any right to use the Licensor's names, logos, project designations, or marks in a way that suggests an official collaboration, endorsement, or authorization, except to the extent required for simple attribution in accordance with Sections 7.1 and 7.2.
7.4 In academic publications, the Software shall be cited in a manner that reasonably refers to "Aurelia Web Relay" and to the Licensor.
8.1 If You contribute code, documentation, or other materials to the Software (e.g., via pull requests, patches, issues with code snippets), You grant the Licensor a:
- non-exclusive,
- worldwide,
- royalty-free,
- perpetual
right to use, modify, reproduce, and publish these Contributions as part of the Software and future versions of the Software under the AWRL or a successor or additional license chosen by the Licensor, including any associated copyrights and, to the extent applicable, any patent rights that are necessarily infringed by using, reproducing or distributing the Contributions as part of the Software.
You acknowledge and agree that Your Contributions may be distributed to other users under the AWRL or under any successor or additional license chosen by the Licensor.
8.2 You warrant that You only submit Contributions for which You hold the necessary rights and that these Contributions do not infringe any third-party rights. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, You consent to the modification, combination and adaptation of Your Contributions as part of the Software and waive any right to object to such modifications on purely moral rights grounds.
9.1 All copyrights and other rights in the Software remain with the Licensor, unless expressly stated otherwise.
9.2 The Software may contain third-party components that are subject to their own licenses (e.g., libraries such as FastAPI, uvicorn, etc.). For these components, the respective third-party licenses apply, which prevail over this License in the event of a conflict. You are responsible for reviewing and complying with these third-party licenses.
9.3 To the extent that the Licensor holds patents that are implicated by the contractual use of the Software, the Licensor grants You a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, and royalty-free patent license that exclusively covers the Non-Commercial Use of the Software permitted under this License. Any patent license beyond this – in particular for Commercial Use – is excluded. This patent license automatically terminates if You initiate or actively participate in any patent infringement claim against the Licensor or any other user of the Software alleging that the permitted Non-Commercial Use of the Software infringes any patent.
10.1 The Software is provided to You “as is”, without any express or implied warranty.
10.2 In particular, no warranty is given for:
- freedom from defects of the Software,
- fitness for a particular purpose,
- availability, performance, or security,
- accuracy or completeness of results produced using the Software.
10.3 You bear sole responsibility for:
- the selection and use of the Software,
- the backup of Your data,
- compliance with any legal requirements (e.g., data protection, copyright, export, or professional regulations) arising from Your specific use case.
Mandatory statutory warranty rights remain unaffected to the extent that they cannot validly be excluded by contract.
11.1 To the extent permitted by law, the Licensor is liable only for damages caused by intent or gross negligence.
11.2 Liability for loss of profit, loss of production, loss of use, loss of data, or indirect, consequential, or incidental damages is excluded to the extent permitted by law.
11.3 Mandatory statutory liability, in particular:
- for damages resulting from injury to life, body, or health,
- under the applicable product liability law,
remains unaffected. If You are a consumer under the laws of Your country of residence, any mandatory consumer protection rights You have under that law remain unaffected and, in case of conflict, prevail over this License.
12.1 This License takes effect as soon as You first receive, download, copy, run, or otherwise use the Software.
12.2 Your rights under this License terminate automatically and without further notice if You breach any of the provisions of this License, in particular:
- the Non-Commercial Clause (Section 4),
- the prohibitions on Commercial Use (Section 5),
- the conditions on Distribution and attribution (Sections 6 and 7).
12.3 Upon termination of the License, You are obliged to cease using the Software and – to the extent reasonably practicable – delete or render unusable all copies of the Software and Derived Works that violate the License. Rights of third parties to whom You granted the Software in accordance with this License prior to termination remain unaffected, provided that such third parties themselves comply with the License terms.
12.4 In the event of a first, less serious breach, the Licensor may, at its discretion, grant You a cure period to remedy the breach and may reinstate Your rights under this License in writing once the breach has been fully cured; You have no entitlement to such a period or reinstatement.
12.5 Sections 7 (Attribution), 8 (Contributions), 9 (Intellectual Property Rights), 10 (Warranty Disclaimer), 11 (Limitation of Liability), 12 (Term, Termination), and 13 (Miscellaneous, Governing Law, and Contact) continue to apply after termination.
13.1 This License constitutes the entire agreement between You and the Licensor with respect to the Software. There are no collateral agreements.
13.2 If any provision of this License is or becomes wholly or partially invalid or unenforceable, the validity of the remaining provisions shall not be affected. In place of the invalid provision, a valid provision shall apply that comes closest to the economic purpose of the invalid provision.
13.3 Unless mandatory statutory provisions provide otherwise, this License is governed by the substantive law of Switzerland (excluding conflict-of-laws rules and the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods). If You are a consumer and have Your habitual residence in a country with mandatory consumer protection laws, such mandatory provisions remain unaffected and prevail in case of conflict.
13.4 The exclusive place of jurisdiction for all disputes arising out of or in connection with this License is – to the extent permitted by law – the domicile or registered office of the Licensor. If You are a consumer, any mandatory rules on consumer jurisdiction under the law of Your country of residence remain unaffected.
13.5 The Licensor may publish revised versions of the AWRL in the future. For versions of the Software that You have already used or received, the license terms applicable at the relevant time apply; however, You may, at Your discretion, switch to a newer version of the License if the latter expressly permits this.
For:
- Commercial Use of the Software (including SaaS, hosting, integration into products, internal use in companies, etc.),
- individual license agreements,
- or other inquiries regarding the AWRL,
please contact the Licensor at:

Without an expressly written commercial license, any form of Commercial Use of the Software remains strictly prohibited.
