Add static type hints

Hi, please could you add static type hints to the code? It would make understanding it a lot easier (and have benefits for you guys, e.g. finding bugs & faster navigation, refactoring, etc.).

If you do I highly recommend using Pyright to check them rather than Mypy. Pyright is much much better than Mypy.
