I would like to suggest running a linter, and perhaps even a formatter, typically from .pre-commit-config.yaml since you already have one. I would also like to suggest ruff. However, flake8, pycodestyle, black are also fine tools if you feel more conservative.

Please take a look at the discussions in #726 and #733. Though I do see some value in code formatters, I don't think these should be enforced here. I only merged your PRs as they were fairly small, otherwise I'd suggest to not do any large formatting changes just for the sake of it.

I understand. In this case, the linter part of ruff might still be of interest, only with rules that make sense to you. I've already applied the few changes/rules that made sense to me.

I'd advise against it. It just creates a lot of churn and unfortunately invites drive-by-contributors. That's especially the case for ruff which also has a lot of opinionated rules and its frequent updates.
