Reasons for the request
I would like to request the transfer of the name nifty
according to PEP 541 Removal of an abandoned project. We would like to use the name on PyPI to host our scientific probabilistic programming package Numerical Information Field Theory (NIFTy).
For various legacy reasons we long included the version in the name of the package (nifty7, nifty8, ...) but we would like to start calling it just "NIFTy" on PyPI if possible. The original project on PyPI that is called NIFTy seems to have gone stale and we have been unsuccessful in reaching the maintainer. Specifically,
- the owner is not reachable by email (reached out on March 22nd 2025)
- the most recent release is more than 10 years old (also see statistics at https://pypistats.org/packages/nifty)
- the website is dead
We believe our scientific probabilistic programming package to be notable and we would like to take over the name. Our package (https://gitlab.mpcdf.mpg.de/ift/nifty and https://github.com/nifty-ppl/nifty) is used at many research institutes (Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Stanford, Harvard, University of Munich, RWTH Aachen, ...), forms the basis of many high-profile research papers (e.g. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-021-01548-0), and has a strong user-base (e.g. https://scholar.google.com/scholar?oi=bibs&hl=en&cites=12049707291412644723 and https://scholar.google.com/scholar?oi=bibs&hl=en&cites=7066434909549607169&as_sdt=5). We have used the name NIFTy consistently since the inception of the library in 2013 and feel very strongly about its name. If possible, we would like to ditch our legacy naming method and bring our package name in line with other python packages, hence the request to acquire the name "nifty" on PyPI.
Maintenance or replacement?
Replacement
Source code repositories URLs
- Current: Unclear as GitHub website is dead (https://yanzhengli.github.io/nifty/) and this github user does not has a nifty repository anymore (https://github.com/YanzhengLi?tab=repositories)
- Our repository: https://gitlab.mpcdf.mpg.de/ift/nifty but we are currently transitioning to https://github.com/NIFTy-PPL/nifty
