PyTorch OSPO Academic Outreach Program

Note: This program is still under production. Details, timelines, and participation requirements may change as we finalize the 2026 plan

Program Mission

Support academia to adopt open source AI tools and best practices by integrating PyTorch Foundation projects into educational programs and by promoting reproducible research aligned with the open source principles that drive PyTorch.

Who is this program for?

  • Instructors, researchers, or educators using PyTorch Foundation projects in academia
  • Academic OSPO professionals supporting open source programs in universities or research centers
  • Subject-matter experts in open source AI practices from academia

Eligibility and Requirements

You should meet all of the following:

  • Academic affiliation: university, academic lab, research institute, or an academic OSPO
  • Relevance to Open Source AI and/or the PyTorch Ecosystem scope: content must relate to PyTorch Foundation projects and/or their ecosystem use in research and education
  • Open sharing: willingness to publish slides/materials under an open license

Program Benefits

  • PyTorch Events Academic Track: participate in the Program Committee to propose themes, and review proposals of the new academic track at major PyTorch Events
  • Speaking/presentation opportunities: highlight academia-led projects relevant to the PyTorch Foundation’s scope
  • Visibility and recognition: Visibility in the PyTorch newsletter and event discounts
  • Community access: networking with peers across academic OSPOs and research labs, engaging with the PyTorch ecosystem

Ways to Engage

1. Present on a Topic

Submit a session for the 2026 Webinar Series. Topics are not limited, but may include:

  • Academia–Foundation showcases: Presentations on PyTorch Foundation–hosted projects that originated in academia and were later donated to the Foundation
  • Academic OSPO and researcher-led sessions: Projects and studies using PyTorch libraries or PyTorch ecosystem projects
  • Open Source AI best practices in academia

2. Advise on Program Design and Evolution

Join the Program Committee. We meet monthly on Wednesdays and participate in ongoing discussions in the PyTorch Slack channel #ospo-and-academic-outreach.

3. Connect and Share with the Academic Community

Join the program mailing list OSPO & Academic Outreach mailing list: https://lists.pytorch.org/g/ospo-outreach. Introduce yourself to the academic community and share ideas, resources, and opportunities.

If you are a PyTorch Ambassador

PyTorch Ambassadors who are directly engaged in academic or research and meet eligibility criteria can submit a webinar proposal using this form.

Licensing and Contribution Requirements

All contributions to the PyTorch OSPO & Academic Outreach Program are under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0) license. By submitting materials, you confirm that you have the necessary rights to license your contribution under CC-BY-4.0. When making a submission, you agree that:

  • Program repositories used for this initiative will clearly specify CC-BY-4.0 as the license for documentation
  • Contributed documentation files must include an appropriate SPDX license identifier for CC-BY-4.0
  • Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO) bot is enabled for this repository. Contributors must sign off their commits to confirm they have the right to contribute under these terms
