Mac: QB keeps no-responding on Quit--can't add torrents..

As subject. version 5.0.5 Mac OS Sequoia 15.5

Can't add new torrents and it "no responses" on quit. After an unspecified amount of time, it stops "working" but doesn't show any change (like a crash) until you try to quit, then it goes no response/beach ball

If I clear out the backup folder from fast resume files, it works...until it stops working again.

Anyone else seeing this?

Builds available in GitHub to download for macOS already include different files, inside the *.zip file with the name I advised to pick before there's a *.dmg file.

So I don't understand when and what nightly build you already tried, if you selected wrong file or if you didn't look what's inside the *.zip or if you want something else.

Not long ago there where 2 macOS fixes added to nightly Master branch and builds using libtorrent v1.2+ sometimes have less anomalies than v2.0+, so that's why I previously asked what did you try.

I literally got them, unzipped, opened the DMG, tried to open them (doing whatever security dance the os wanted me to).

I'm sure this is more a user knowledge problem, mind you. I know the cmake folder inside those is for something, but don't know what....if it's to compile my own version or if it's supplementary files or just artifacts from the build.

We're outside the bounds of my knowledge base.

How to do GitHub fork or how to waste your own device resources to compile and build qBittorrent yourself or that latest automated pull request nightly *.dmg file isn't working with certain macOS version should've all been separated discussions. Maybe have to wait for next month when GitHub enables v15 support by default.

Separating issues makes it's easier for more familiar users to notice or others who search for solution to specific things to find answers more quickly.

If you look at Wiki, then there's multiple links explaining how to compile, unfortunately these are most likely with outdated info.

I don't have macOS, so someone else more familiar with it should confirm what's not working and how to get it work.

After opening this link, scrolling down and opening a script page you'll see there's potentially very easy way to most likely get latest fixes, even has users commenting that it works, but no mention what macOS version.

Also there is the script allowing to build qBittorrent master branch for desired architecture in "fully automatic mode".

In that script you should change dependencies to latest versions to potentially have less bugs and compatibility issues with newer OS versions. You can always look at the news page and click on Library versions to see and know what latest qBit stable installers use for other OS and if got time then research online if there's anything newer available.

If ever manage to get newer version running and prefer using libtorrent v2 instead of v1.2, then in qBit advanced settings you should change Disk IO to Simple Read/Write, stick with stable fast resume files and make sure file pool size is low 100 ~ 200 to avoid various RAM, speed and external drive related issues.

I suspect this is due to macOS-latest (14) GitHub Runner Image not having macOS 15.5 SDK, only has up to 15.2 & Xcode 16.x Req.

Looking at the error message I posted above, this seems to be pertinant

Try with a new code signature. Paste this in Terminal sudo codesign --force --deep --sign - and then drag the qBittorrent.app to the terminal and press enter.

Program opened and scanned thru my exisiting queue as you'd think it would.

Stuff in Queue's status can change and download.

Adding a torrent from a .torrent file: it adds like normal. in stalled.then changed to download and began downloading...got to 40% and appears to have frozen while I started typing this sentence.

Quit...get spinning beachball.
Force Quit
Restart and the torrent I added is there, showing 0% progress. a Force recheck shows that it had progressed a bit more (49%) before freezing or quit. Torrent did finish downloading. Another Freeze/force quit.

This is pretty much the same behavior I've been seeing from the regular release, though the changing status and adding got further than the other has.

I think the problem that you can't start nighly builds may come from the hardened runtime. Can you try if you still get the error with this?

It started well, but it froze up or hung or whatever after a few minutes as others have.

To further expound the description, the program itself appears to run..i can move thru the window, look at different torrent screens, but the displays stop updating, so for example, download has shown 3.9 MiB/s (2.99 GiB) for the past 10 minutesd..no fluctuation in speed, no change in download amount.

If I double click on a .torrent file.. it does not open now. (it will before the "freeze" happens).
If I change a priority of a file in atorrent, it does not change now (It will before the freeze)

I tried, and using the + button to add a torrent will open the dialog and then the torrent, but it does not get added to the queue.

when I quit (cmd-q) it will beach ball until I Force Quit it.

If I quit before the "freeze", it will take a few moments, beachball for 10-20 seconds, then just quit as normal.

You can now try using newer macOS nightly builds again, because a temporary fix suggested by @Ryu481 was just merged to Master branch.

Previously #23016 was supposed to fix launch crash issue, but it wasn't tested enough, so a small change to get macOS builds hopefully easily work for everyone was recently added:

Try latest nightly, but pick: qBittorrent-CI_macOS_GUI=ON_libtorrent-1.2.20_Qt-6.9.1

Then you can be more certain if your issues are reproducible with v1.2.20 or if only with v2.0.11, otherwise have to guess and try luck with changing various settings or updating used dependencies.

It starts and works fine....then after a bit of time it stops...the GUI seems to be fine, but changes to torrents, like changing priority of files inside, or adding torrents doesn't work....queue just stops changing. Quitting then goes into infinite beachball.

Should've looked at only the authors of merged (closed - approved code changes - purple icon) pull requests with macOS label instead of picking some random few recent users who have just recently tried doing some code changes.

Even if you would only tag (notify) volunteers who have contributed to macOS builds, then maybe they are still using older macOS to avoid incompatibility issues and either have no clue what's causing issues or using somekind of workarounds.

If can't try older macOS, then you could try creating a GitHub fork, changing macOS workflow file to make qBit use more recent development builds of dependencies/libraries (Qt, libtorrent) help or not.

FWIW One thing I found, at the point things "freeze" (again, the GUI seems like it's all good, but things stop working "inside") the program DOES stop all network activity.
I had expected this was happening, but happened to have a network monitor on last nite and confirmed it.

Well currently unfortunately changing macos-latest to force macos-15 keeps causing error and so many forked builds fail.

So have to keep mac workflow file to use default macos-latest or macos-14 and hopefully it's fixed by 1st September when GitHub has updated everyone's workflow macos-latest to automatically silently force using macos-15 runner.

Yes, you can check the logs & just do a search for xcode & it will show what version is used.

fwiw - this build seems to behave a little better so far - e.g., is staying up longer than the nightlies. I did my own build too, but need to check my library versions against yours.

I just Dld and it runs and quits, which is a great improvement so far :) I had tracked it back to Qt troubles, and the Changelog says there were fixes in that area... so fingers crossed?
