Width of Tab Panels

I am using tabs and tab panels and they are working well. However, the tab panel on the left of my screen is a lot wider than it needs to be. I've tried to put in a max-width in the q-tab-panels, the q-tab-panel, the splitter and the template, to no avail. The left area can be shrunk manually with the mouse when one clicks on the vertical line.

I really really want to default the width to the second screenshot below. How do I make that left panel more narrow, so the right panel (which has my table in it) takes up more screen room? Thanks.
