Can gzipping interfere with Service Worker update?

I am trying to track down a strange error we are getting, and wanted to rule out something. Here is what seems to have happened:

1. We noticed our nginx server was not gzipping js files, so we turned that on
2. We made some changes to our PWA and released it as normal
3. Many people (but not all it seems) are getting a blank white page of death when loading the app, and the only thing that resolves it is to clear the site cache in the browser prefs. A hard reload does NOT solve this problem.
4. it seems that subsequent PWA updates work just fine, as expected

So it seems that gzipping these files has resulted in a one time error in updating our PWA (for some people), is this possible?
