How to use ripple effect programmatically?

I want to draw user's focus on a button when mouse cursor moves into some area. I would like to trigger a ripple on the button. I know q-button has it natively and there is v-ripple directive. But from the documentation, it does not seem like it can be triggered externally. Is there some workaround?

I think it only fires from a click event.
