⏰ Upcoming release to fix CRAN?

I hope you’re already aware, but cli is failing on CRAN: https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/cli/index.html

It’s due next week Thursday. I couldn’t find initiatives here to release early next week, but given that so many packages rely on cli (there’s hundreds that have cli in Imports), I think this should be top priority 🙈

Fastest fix for now may be to rely on R ≥ 4.0.0 (WARNINGs are only on R 3.6), which seems fine to me especially given that 4.6.0 will be released this month. Or maybe reach out to CRAN team ASAP.

The r-lib packages devtools, usethis, roxygen2 and testthat all rely on R >= 4.1, while pak (R >= 3.5) and callr (R >= 3.4) have some older requirements.

I'm sure not why y'all are panicking. We are aware of the problem and working with CRAN on it. It's not appropriate to tag a grab bag of Posit folks, most of whom have nothing to do with this package.

Well, there is no progress indication whatsoever on this repo as I could find, and I only tagged people from the DESCRIPTION file, which includes you. I think this was just a friendly community safeguard thing, following the fact that cli is a major dependency for many packages.

Wouldn’t consider that ‘panicking’ 🙂

@msberends maybe you didn't think about this but you did tag both the Chief Scientist and CTO of a company, which you really should only do in emergencies.

@hadley I do know that, I’m well aware of that. But isn’t it obvious to tag the first 1-2 people that are in the DESCRIPTION file, as they are the package developers? That said, I did consider this an emergency. Again, there was no indication, that I could find, that there was awareness of this issue amongst you. This pkg is quite a cornerstone for many packages, and CRAN has shown me personally as a pkg dev no mercy whatsoever about their deadlines. So that’s why I chose to tag you, it wasn’t a lighthearted choice and I appreciate that you’re in leading roles of Posit. I now see that it was preferred I didn’t, but then I’m not sure how to handle such a situation in the future. Just a simple new issue, or a note in NEWS, or a blog note, or anything to make the community aware, would’ve solved everything upfront. We’re only here to (try to) help you guys 🙂 No ill intentions.

@msberends you can just assume that we will keep all of our packages on CRAN, as we do and have done day and day out for the last 10+ years.
