Menu for settings and system tray not available in Ubuntu 20.04

After installing on Ubuntu 20.04, I'm unable to open Workrave settings and am unable to see the icon on the system tray either. Workrave works with the default settings, but I can't use it anymore because I need to change the break timings and there is no GUI option to change it. You do not seem to have adapted Workrave for the latest Ubuntu version. Please update it ASAP.

I assume you are using the standard Ubuntu version of Gnome? As far as I know, Gnome does not show system tray icons anymore. You could enable the Gnome Shell applet instead, see: https://workrave.org/docs/applets/gnome/

Are you using Workrave package from Ubuntu 20.04? This seems to be version 1.10.37.

Workrave tries to make sure you can always access its settings, either via the main window, via the system tray icon, or via an applet. If you close the main windows and no other means are available to access the menu, Workrave minimizes the main windows or exits.

Workrave 1.10.45 fixes an issue that caused the main window to disappear (see #244, and #259). You could install a more recent Workrave version from my Ubuntu PPA (see https://workrave.org/download/ubuntu/) and check if that fixes the problem?

Given that Mint derives from Ubuntu, this may be the same problem as #327

Same situation here - standard Ubuntu 20.04, workrave 1.10.37. I have the Tweaks app and workrave extension installed, and I get the applet in the panel. Clicking on the applet gave me the option to open the main window, but choosing that option didn't do anything.

I managed to get my main window back using the workaround from #244, ie
$ dconf write /org/workrave/gui/main-window/enabled true

Confirming the issue with Linux Debian 11, using (reluctantly) GNOME 3 over X11 as a window manager.

Executing dconf write /org/workrave/gui/main-window/enabled true immediately shows the small workrave window, and settings are then accessible. Thank you @aschweer for the workaround.

I got it to work! Ubuntu 22.04.1 WorkRave 1.10.50. The problem is in the packaging and the documentation.

Workrave is really not usable without gnome-shell-extensions (and that is different from gnome-tweaks because they split those apart).

Simply installed gnome-shell-extensions and workrave-gnome. Then, open the extensions program and turn on the workrave extension. Then, everything works.

The documentation for how to install on any relevant system should be updated, and ideally Ubuntu's workrave-gnome packaging should make gnome-shell-extensions` be a required dependency.

Side-note: I should clarify whether gnome-tweaks is still needed in order to access the startup applications settings and add workrave to that. Maybe turning on the workrave extension already does it?
